@alphasymp @FiggyTater @WhenBeliefDies Here's a short articulation of what I call the participation theodicy. There's links in the follow-up, of short papers I've written as well as a couple discussions I've had with people going over it. twitter.com/WriterJohnBuckโ€ฆ

@graciousathiest @jonsteingard @BissetteHunter @RealAtheology The one I find most plausible is my own, that the greatest thing God could do would be to create a perfect world through the contribution of creatures bringing it about. But, such would require initially creating an imperfect world with creatures where evils can occur.

Happy Easter, Christ is risen! This Tuesday I will be on @waldenpod, going over the major points of agreement and disagreement between Catholicism and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints with @ATIF_Podcast. Iโ€™m really excited.

@NewAntiquarian_ @DarthHarryson But the angel doesnโ€™t say that she is currently pregnant, but that she will become pregnant. If she was expecting to have sex with Joseph, she would assume that this pregnancy will come about as a result of that. But she is instead surprised to hear that she will become pregnant.

Just because Mary wasnโ€™t having sex then doesnโ€™t mean things wouldnโ€™t change after she was married. Your argument sounds desperate. As it was used by St. Augustine, it discredits him as well. Bigger picture, the perpetual virginity of Mary idea is hardly benign. It diminishes and denigrates a holy married woman by saying she closed her marriage to life and did not give fully to her husband. It makes the Holy Family a terrible example, and promotes perverted ideas about sex. If itโ€™s true, those who promote it engage in detraction. If false, calumny. Best to leave it alone.

In no way does Luke 1:34 imply that Mary took a vow of perpetual virginity. She was betrothed, but as is explicitly stated in the first chapter of Matthew, this was before they were married and moved in together. This is consistent with Maryโ€™s response in the present tense, referring to her current state. This means they were not having intercourse at the time, not that it would never happen. If you read the first chapters of Matthew and Luke together the only reasonable interpretation is that Mary understood Gabrielโ€™s statement to mean it would happen before she was fully married, and Josephโ€™s reaction confirms this. Your argument is foolish at best, and dishonest when employed by those who actually know better. It is the kind of thing that makes Catholics look like idiots, it tarnishes the Churchโ€™s reputation, and thus calls into question all Catholic teaching.

@thebluetruther @ThoughtfulSaint If omniscience is essential to divinity, and Jesus was not omniscient, then Jesus was not divine. Are you suggesting that omniscience is merely accidental to divinity? Or would you reject the notion that 'God became man', since what Jesus was while man was not really, fully God?

@LonghornJoker @PTSPentax Exactly. If heavenly father was fully God without a prior God forming him into his spirit-body, then he's of a different kind from us, who do need a God to form us into our spirit bodies. If he did need a prior God to form him, this'd go on to infinity, thus no final explanation.

@PTSPentax 1. If God made you, even if it was from pre-existing intelligence (whatever that is) then you wouldnโ€™t be eternally existent. 2. That would make God and man of two different species, which Mormonism says is false.

Joseph Smith said spirits were eternal and self-existent. Thatโ€™s one of the problems I see in Mormonism; it makes God unnecessary.
Thoughtful-Faith@ThoughtfulSaint

@austinknight As usual you have to create non biblical categories to try and read into the text things that are not there. No one is denying we exist because of God. God is more glorious than anything in existence.

@sjggraham The Marian apparitions. If Christianity is false (IE, Jesus was not raised from the dead) these are highly unlikely to have occurred, so the fact that they did is very strong evidence for the resurrection.

@DarthHarryson Bodily assumption Matt 17:3 ...Moses and Elijah appeared to them, talking with Him. (Mary's death does not take place within the bible, but Moses and Elijah were assumed into heaven, so there is biblical precedent for God doing this to those he favors)

@LonghornJoker Objectively speaking, LDS theology contains many heresies. As do many protestant denominations. As Catholics we must embrace all truth, both within LDS and Protestantism, and oppose all falsehood in these sects.
