@RetroTechChris Hard drives are usually rated for a non-operating 1ms shock of 150-300Gs, so there’s a chance the drives might still work from the driver dropping them at the door… I’d be more concerned about the sustained shock load of two drives bumping up against each other the whole way.

@ActionRetro1 Too late to fork a whole distro and call it Vinux (for Vintage computer Linux)?

@RetroTechChris From my experience, these Caviar drives are some of the ones more likely to still be working.

@RetroTechorDie @ijustine You’re wearing a custom hockey jersey, that has to add bonus points.

YouTube is a minefield of April Fools videos today… I also released a video today that some might think is a joke, but it’s actually a video I made to help me reassemble my PS2 by playing the disassembly backwards. Maybe it might help you, too. youtu.be/_g1oKG0T6hI

@SheppaDean @RetroTechChris Yes, usually just a small dab of solder on one or both sides, as you don’t want to risk overheating the actual crystal oscillator inside. But the solder is not always needed.
English

@jdmcs @RetroTechChris These soldered to a pad? I’m probably too young to have seen setups like that.

English

@SheppaDean @RetroTechChris It’s for a radial package crystal oscillator. Some of them require the can to be soldered to a ground for EMI reasons.
English

@RetroTechChris Interesting. What is the purpose of the large exposed copper pad? Are there any components on the opposite side?

English

@RetroTechChris That is an odd symptom. Hopefully it’s not the keyboard/mouse controller.

@sheetz Maybe the rainbow is inside and leading to a cup of fresh Fryz…

@RetroTechChris I think I was watching that auction, that oddly shaped network card has “you’ve seen me before” vibes… that and all the modems.

@16bitnostalgia I wonder if that was on purpose, perhaps to identify if you’ve copied content from the ROM. Like a hidden message (like the famous “stolen from Apple” in early Mac ROMs), but in this case a not-too-obvious missing pixel that could be brought up as evidence in court.
English

@TeamYouTube I’m seeing errors when I try to access YouTube using iOS or Amazon Fire TV. They’re errors that simply say “something went wrong”. Are you having issues, or is this on my end?
English

@techknight2 I have seen worse (computer just thrown in a box with no padding). I am waiting for someone to try throwing the computer directly into a poly bag… or just slapping the label on the computer, but I don’t think they would accept that.
But that packing would rank in my bottom 10.

@kofi_button As much as I need new kit, I’d rather do the collab.

@ThisOldTech2 This Hewitt-Rand looks identical to my Emerson 8800EC. I wonder who the OEM was for this computer…
