warning to any devs using the phrase "choose your own adventure" to describe their games, Chooseco is issuing takedown notices to @itchio for trademark infringement. Example game page they went after:
@moonscript@itchio haha I didn't mean to get itch in trouble or anything, and I understand the legal mechanisms and incentives... but it's still unjust that the outcome of this is "hey indies, we have to takedown your games until you delete 4 words"
@moonscript@itchio "Choose your own adventure" should be a public domain phrase. I've never heard of Chooseco, but I promise you they didn't invent that phrase.
@moonscript@itchio As far as I can tell, their trademarks only apply to books/print. Surprised @itchio is just rolling over on that. I expected better from them.
@moonscript@itchio Let's just all collectively agree to use "pick your own adventure" from now on instead, and get it so popular it eclipses them. Like reforming a WhatsApp group with all the same members except one person :P
@moonscript@itchio My guess is the person who invented the "choose your own adventure" concept doesn't even work for chooseco anymore. Just patent trolls.
@moonscript@itchio this is very shitty, but have heard stories of this in the past too. what if you use the phrase "choose your own adventure" in context of a sentence & frame it as describing something players can do rather than an adjectival phrase? (e.g. "choose your own adventure in this...")
@moonscript@itchio@YongYea maybe you wanna check this oneout.
Also if you make a video can you "insist" on the fact that @moonscript at least does communicate with other itch users on that kind of issue ?
That's the kind of proactiveness we'd like to see from steam too you know ;)
@moonscript@zarawesome@itchio EDGE EDGE EDGE EDGE EDGE #edge
...again. hopefully not too many people are screwed over and this ends the same way as that fiasco
@moonscript@itchio >Chooseco was founded in 2003
>CYOA genre exists since at least the late 70's
>The genre's definition is so broad you can't trademark it reasonably
>Chooseco clearly didn't see the shitstorm King had when they tried to trademark "Candy" and "Crush"
