In South Africa we have watched a quiet but relentless slide into lawlessness. Jumping traffic lights has become commonplace. Driving under the influence is often treated lightly. Pedestrians cross roads with little regard for the danger. Informal settlements spring up overnight on any open piece of land. Illegal electricity connections are no longer treated as serious offences - they are simply accepted as part of daily life. Informal traders claim pavements and intersections as their own. Prisoners somehow manage to keep smartphones. Driving without a licence is widespread. One could go on forever. The point is simple: there has been a clear breakdown in law and order. On the surface, the relaxation of rules is understandable. For decades, harsh and often humiliating laws targeted black South Africans in particular. So society swung from one extreme to the other, from rigid control to an “anything goes” environment. In many ways this chaos is presented as freedom, the freedom that was denied to the majority for so long. We even open our borders to illegal immigration with the argument: “They took us in when we were running from the apartheid police.” A noble memory, but a problematic policy. I once listened to a Minister of Correctional Services speaking about prisoners. The minister spoke much like a principal talking about learners, our collective duty to help them reach their full potential. The fact that some of these individuals were rapists, hardened killers and career criminals seemed to fade behind the focus on rehabilitation. We appear to have confused ordinary criminals with the political prisoners of the past. In our emphasis on ubuntu there is often little room left for the discipline that law and order require. It is as if, as a nation, we struggle to hold both compassion and consequences together. This confused state is not progressive. It is setting us backwards. I know of no country that has ever become successful on a foundation of chaos. We urgently need to strike the right balance, one that honours our painful history without using it as a permanent excuse to abandon the very rules that keep a society from falling apart. #ProudlySA

Sorry about your trauma. This happened to my daughter. Her phone was pinging in Hillbrow and SAPS told us the robbers methodology is to put the phone in a basket hanging on rope at ground level which is hauled to the upper floors of the building. Money is lowered and the robbers are on their way. The ringleaders are faceless with countless escape routes planned so they won’t ever be caught.

Make this police station trend and famous. I do not know who is the original poster. Just had one of the most appalling encounters with the South African Police Service at the Sandton station. My daughter was mugged at knifepoint on her way to varsity. They took her bag, her devices, her cards, everything. Her devices keep pinging online. I can see the exact location: an address in Hillbrow. So we rush to the station to report the crime and ask for help. We explain that we want to open a case, and that we can literally see where the stolen items are. Can they assist? The officer says no. She actually laughs at the idea of sending a patrol car to the address and tells me I can’t seriously expect the police to knock on doors looking for my property. What they can do, apparently, is give us a case number for insurance but even that requires serial numbers and the phone’s IMEI. Without paperwork, nothing moves. So according to the police: before you seek help at a police station near you, rush home, gather your documents, and only then present yourself at the police station. We’re back home now. Without a case number but a form we need to return only once we’ve unearthed all the paperwork for the stolen items. Only then will they register a case number apparently. My child is shaken to her core; I’ve had to give her something to calm her down. And we still need to drive back to the station just to get a case number. Meanwhile, the devices are still showing at No. 3 Soper Avenue, Hillbrow. But our mighty men and women in blue won’t go near it.

THIS IS EVERYTHING THAT IS WRONG WITH SOUTH AFRICA. As encountered by Zandile Tshangane. So this morning my niece got mugged, hit and almost rapped on her way to school by two boys. We then went to the police station to report the case so one of the guys asked us to sit down and we will be assisted. This lady (on the picture) then comes and yells, why are we sitting where we are seated? We tried to explain but her attitude was already on steroids. We proceed to explain why we were there and she said she will not open a case with out the suspects names, surname or ID number. We asked for her name and she said “Andazi” (I do not know) So when I am being mugged I should ask them thieves for the details? Carletonville Saps you can do way better than this.

2 727 days ago Advocate Shamila Batohi began her tenure as the National Director of Public Prosecutions. As the 'outsider' unburdened by the toxic legacy of many insiders who coveted the job, Batohi emerged as the antidote to the institutional paralysis that had left the institution rudderless and listless. Her commencement - in that long-forgotten age of Thuma Mina and the pyrrhic sense of optimism that President Ramaphosa managed to sell to most citizens - was welcomed and just like Ramaphosa 12 months earlier, the sense of goodwill accompanying it was meant to give her some breathing room to figure out how to fix a broken institution. But just as the momentum and goodwill of the Ramaphosa accession had been squandered gradually, Batohi simply never moved up from the basement of accession. Rather, as public expectations multiplied and the law enforcement system remained fragile, the cleavage between hope and action widened. With every botched high profile case the embarrassment was amplified. The habit of claiming that all was well in spite of the glaring evidence otherwise, became the sine qua non of a leader hamstrung by an institutional paralysis and her own inability to formulate a leadership strategy that would free her from the shackles of institutional entanglement. As she slowly approached retirement age which meant that she also wouldn't serve a 10-year term just like all her predecessors, the impending exit was met with a sense of relief rather than consternation. So dire and adrift was her leadership of the NPA itself, when the time to find a replacement for her finally arrived, the overwhelming consensus was that absolutely no one from within was fit for the job. (The performance of one of the candidates at the #Madlanga Commission is the answer to the question). Her valedictory steps included initating a process of interrogating the fitness of Andrew Chauke to hold office. Except of course, it turned out she might not have even initiated anything or even knew what exactly had been initiated. As the Commission of Inquiry got underway, the disturbing development related to the question of whose competence was actually meant to be interrogated. Her exit from the Commission was only commendable in the sense that it was at least decisive - unlike every other key decision in her tentative term. Her retreat from confrontation at the time where she could have been setting clear standards of leadership expectations and standards from leaders within the NPA she was about to leave; was a fitting reminder of what her tenure had really been about. And so here we are, 2 727 days later, the only other leader who mastered retreat from confrontation better than Batohi - President Cyril Ramaphosa - has appended his signature to a letter that is a fitting epitaph to a reign of reluctance. For someone once so distinguished as the surgeon who dissected the Hansie Cronje saga will scientific precision and went off to a storied career in the Hague, it is a great tragedy that Shamila's professional obituary is simply summed up as follows: 'She of great potential and public support that gradually and excruciatingly mutated into a living monument to incompetence...' A great pity.

WELKOM — A 59-year-old foreign national was arrested by Welkom Public Order Police on Saturday, 18 July 2026 at a house in K4 Location, Kutlwanong, after intelligence pointed to an unlicensed firearm on the premises. During a search, police found a handgun, live ammunition, several South African identity documents, bank cards and a large sum of cash hidden in a bedroom. Investigations suggest the suspect is an unregistered moneylender who allegedly keeps clients’ documents. The firearm, ammunition, documents, bank cards and money believed to be proceeds of crime were seized. The suspect will appear in the Odendaalsrus Magistrate’s Court soon on charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and contravention of the National Credit Act.
