@1995hoo

I'm a rabid Capitals and UVA sports fan, and my wife says I am obsessed with roads and driving.

@STATter911 A real intellectual there. Steal a car and then call attention to yourself by driving at night without headlights. Seems to me that if you're "riding dirty," it would be common sense to try to avoid drawing attention. (Yes, I know many thieves are high or otherwise impaired.)

@DMVNewLiberals I’d suggest there’s a third key difference. A bus route can go either directly to the subway stop or at least into the Union Station parking garage near the escalators to the Amtrak concourse. Far better than the absurd walk from the streetcar stop in the middle of H Street.

Lots of people talking about the streetcar here but two key differences: 1. This BRT would be separated from traffic, something the H-St Streetcar never got 2. Busses are less sexy but WAY cheaper to build, operate, and scale
Edward Russell@ByERussell

WMATA is recommending against a new station to serve the northern side of the RFK redevelopment. Instead a new "Gold Line" BRT could connect RFK to Union Station along the former DC Streetcar corridor. #washingtondc

@jakesauser @waltersbardc @maustermuhle I remember back when the Nats were at RFK, one Opening Day there were free shuttle buses to Union Station. I worked near Metro Center at the time, so I tried the bus to the Red Line rather than standing on line for a train at Stadium–Armory. It was surprisingly fast.

@1995hoo @waltersbardc @maustermuhle Yeah... a bus at least could pull into the actual union station bus station in the garage, dramatically shortening the walk. if MARC and VRE get their shit together and run special pre- and post-game trains, this bus becomes even more appealing

WMATA's proposal would include bus-rapid transit lines running in dedicated lanes down the middle of H Street NE. That's likely the most ideal approach, but would require rebuilding H Street again. (It was last fully rebuilt to put the streetcar tracks in.)

@waltersbardc @jakesauser @maustermuhle People connecting to or from the Red Line could well find it faster, depending on frequency and where the bus stops at Union Station (that is, the streetcar stop was in the utterly wrong location). Of course, "faster" doesn’t necessarily equal "willing to try it."

@jakesauser @maustermuhle Nobody commuting to RFK from the suburbs are going to hop on a bus. You have a better chance at pedicabs down the Anacostia riverwalk to Navy Yard

@StanleyRoberts I remember when I had to have surgery at age 7 and the doctors said they would "put me to sleep." I knew what that meant as to someone's cat or dog and I freaked out.

Overheard in San Francisco: I remember when I was a kid and I had to have surgery. I thought it was cool for the doctor to give me amnesia.

@JinxedRealityX My question on VA is how their Supreme Court allowed the ballot initiative to get to the voters in the first place. Shouldn't they have stepped in and halted it before it got there? I mean, it's good that Dems wasted all that money on a fail, but what will be the fallout?

TX, FL, and TN don’t require constitutional amendments to redistrict. Virginia does if they redistrict outside the independent commission, and they didn’t follow their constitution’s requirements to bring the amendment up for a vote. Your low IQ is showing.
Fred Guttenberg@fred_guttenberg

Since Virginia won't let voters decide, Governor @SpanbergerForVA should follow the lead of Texas, Florida, and Tennessee and just impose the new map on the state.

My wife's due date is today. This weekend she seemed scared and asked to have a serious conversation with me. Wife - "If the baby is born on my due date will you make a Star Wars joke?" Me - "Of course not. I would never dream of it." Wife - "I just needed to check."

I agree completely with @AdamTuss. No reason to turn the heat back on yesterday, last night, or today. It was only 2° cooler in the house today than it would have been had I turned the heat on. A sweatshirt did the job. (And a cold room is nice for sleeping.) @eunyangnbc

@MrMontagoose @DownGoesBrown @ScoutingTheRefs The rulebook's text is clear: "If one or more penalties (minor or major) are assessed between the time of the missed infraction and the video review that disallows the apparent goal, the offending team will still be required to serve the penalties identified and assessed."

@DownGoesBrown @ScoutingTheRefs There's no way that can be a correct call, though? He's only on a breakaway because he's offside. They rewind the clock to before there was a call. A weak call. And no penalty shot when Greig was dumped. Reffing is sub par.

That would have been the first penalty shot OT goal in NHL history, by the way. Shooters are 0-for-5 all-time.

@bilwhite @DownGoesBrown Miller’s wasn’t overtime. The first OT penalty shot was Joe Juneau in the second OT of the 1996 4OT loss (at the time, the third-longest game ever). The puck bounced a lot and it was one of the worst penalty shot efforts I’ve ever seen.

.@VaDOTNOVA Don’t know whether this is yours or Fairfax County's. Corner of Silver Lake Blvd and Interparcel Rd. Note the bizarre yields. The other street has stop signs. And note how there are yields on BOTH sides of the intersection. These should be R1-5a, not plain yield.

@Kristinartz Go meet the cat, but don’t feel that you have to adopt unless it feels right. Our cat died last year. We were going to wait a few months, but the lady who told us about her told us about another she’d learned about, so we decided to go meet her and we just knew.

@STATter911 @HighwayBob I recall Washington Post reporters started using “Mixing Bowl” to refer to the Springfield Interchange circa 1999, which of course was shortly before the reconstruction began. I’ve always used “Springfield Interchange” because I associate the other name with the Pentagon complex.

As always, a good question from @HighwayBob. Here's the reply, as best as I can manage, from deep within what's left of my addled mind. For old-timers like me, the original Mixing Bowl was on the Henry G. Shirley Highway and its various ramps from and to Washington Blvd., the Pentagon, and Pentagon City. Essentially, what we now know as I-395N Exits 8A, B, and C (image 1). He may not have named it, but the term was greatly popularized in the 1960s by my late friend, Dan Rosensen, AKA "Captain Dan", then the WWDC-AM traffic reporter (and continued with many other traffic reporters following in Dan's footsteps). After the turn of the century, during or following the rebuilding of the Springfield interchange (where I-395, I-495, and I-95 meet), it became the Mixing Bowl (image 2). I don’t know if this was traffic reporter, TV/newspaper reporter, or VDOT-inspired. I never received a memo, but it's possible it was in the construction press releases at the time. And yes, it is a considerably more complicated set of ramps than the area around the Pentagon. Hope this helps.
