Netflix was a slog. It took us about 18 months to find the repeatable scalable model we needed. And even after that, it took us 2-1/2 more years to get to 500,000 subscribers. I was so pumped I decided to print out the report where we finally crossed the line. Netflix DVD-by-mail at it’s peak had nearly 40,000,000 subscribers.

5 years ago this week, I walked thru this door for the first time. I had no idea what to expect. By 11am I wanted to quit the tiny startup I’d packed up my life to join. Instead, I showed up the next day. And just kept showing up… 5 years later, I’m saying goodbye to Future: ******** To sum up what this chapter has meant to me both professionally and personally is impossible. Making the jump to leave a comfortable life in basketball (to a leaky basement office in SF) for the 0.01% shot at building a world-changing company.. ..and to keep showing up through all the inevitable highs and lows of a startup.. ..has changed my life for the better in ways I never could’ve imagined. It’s remarkable to think about all that our ‘tiny startup’ is accomplishing today, and the truly life-changing impact our Coaches are having on the lives of so many — every single day. But what I’m most proud of is the unparalleled team we’ve built. From my very first day, I told anyone who’d listen; “We will build the best team in the world” ..filled with ‘givers’ who are far smarter and more talented than me—and that if I did my job those people would grow to replace me. From the moment I hired @rzernicke, and every Coach thereafter, my sole mission has been to create opportunities by empowering everyone; coach myself out of a job; and “leave the jersey in a better place”. That day has come and I couldn’t be more thrilled for the direction Future is headed to execute on our ambitious vision to ladder up and care for millions of people’s daily health & fitness. I’m forever grateful to @rmandal & @jsmaria for taking a bet on me (and @andrewRM3 for hopping on a plane in the middle of winter to recruit me in West Lafayette, IN). And to our 100’s of amazing Coaches, thank you for trusting in me and bringing our vision to life which has led to opportunities I never dreamed were possible. I’ll still always remain involved with what we’re building, just now from a different seat. I can’t wait to share what’s next, but I’ll save that for later… All I’ll say for now; it will be the biggest chapter yet in pursuit of fulfilling my life’s purpose: To inspire and create opportunities for as many people as possible…

There is a lot that goes into building a startup and it's not easy for anyone. You will fail many times before you succeed. This is normal and it's okay. Just learn to love it when it sucks and you'll go farther than most.

2.5 years ago we laid off half our team, felt like failures, and were looking for the next thing. Hoping we could build something people actually wanted. One massive pivot and a whole lot of hustle and we're #53 on YC's top company list. Lesson learned: Don't Stop. Keep Going.
