@realhansard @Gav_Griffiths Surely something has to be done? Is it not ridiculous that a 3 bed semi in Manchester pays more council tax than a £10m property in Mayfair?

@RobR44133618 @TheEvEngineer But is it low? Is it 'so low? I don't think a fuel duty that's about the same as wholesale petrol cost before VAT is low. What is low about that? If you can't get a grip on this, guess what else the government can convince you of?😂😂

@1sthand2 @TheEvEngineer No fuel tax inflation indexation increase in cash terms since Jan 2011. In fact there has been a 5p cut. Fuel costs here have gone from among Europe's highest, to middle of the pack, in that time. Top prices: Petrol, Denmark, £2.32 Diesel, Netherlands, £2.40

@TheEvEngineer You think you are entitled to pay no tax? You are deluded. So long as EV taxes are significantly below ICE cars, I am content. Both will be taxed, and heavily. In fact I am distressed that taxes on ICE are so low, especially on fuels.

Southeast Asia is great and fantastic at many things, But it’s still fundamentally third world at health and safety standards, so doing an activity like this or even god forbid riding on a motorbike if you’re not a local is quite frankly retarded. You cannot trust the local businesses here with your life in this manner. Life is cheap in Asia.

@tom550993 Well regulators don't think like that and hence Ferrari needs an EV. I suppose there is a niche where one can have the Luce as the primary car and still have that 12cylinder for fun. Family and all that you know....😂😂😂

There are a few issues that are touched on here. It made me think what my take on it is? Firstly, EV’s make a lot of sense for many use cases and I’m happy to accept that, certainly from a tailpipe emissions perspective, in towns they are better for our poor little lungs. However, I think I find it hard to take the idea seriously that Ferrari doing an EV will make a hapeth of difference to the environment. So, it’s tough to make an argument for posh EV’s that do 3k miles a year on that basis…my perception might even be that they’re worse for the environment at that mileage. Secondly, there is the perceived value of the skateboard architecture…at £40k I don’t really care about what pushes me along the road - it’s an appliance for most people. In fact, the airy cabin and silent propulsion mixed with cheap charging is a bonus. But as a spare vehicle, one that should major on feel and emotion and where looking at, and listening to a thumping V12 is part of the theatre it’s a tougher sell. Indeed, my perception is that the battery in a ferrari Luce is basically the same as the one in a BYD Seal…the power outputs and performance aren’t markedly different - they’re both too fast to use. So there’s no added value there. Compare that to the perception of a ferrari V12 vs. a 2.0 litre 4 pot. There’s massive and obvious value right there…you can see it, feel it and hear it. Overall, it probably leads me to where I feel that a half sensible world (haha) should be. We should use electric cars for our commute, popping into town etc. and if you’re lucky enough to have a Ferrari then keep the thumping V12…it’ll make no difference to the environment, be lots of fun and make teenage boys beam with pleasure, just like a Countach might have done in 1985.

@tparsi What a bad take. We have a long history of family members being picked to finish out the term of a senator who died or resigned It's fine if you don't like the practice, but to pretend it's something that's considered unthinkable in our political culture is historically ignorant

A lot of people are missing the point here. The 40% tax threshold was £43,875 in 2010. Today it’s £50,270. An increase of just £6,395 in 16 years. If it kept pace with inflation, it would be closer to £75,000 today!
Hayward@JH_Investments

The UK’s 40% tax rate was meant for the wealthy. Now nearly 1 in 5 taxpayers pay it. In the 1990s it was closer to 1 in 30. At what point does a “tax on the rich” become a tax on people with a good salary rather than real wealth?

@proptechpioneer In Aberdeen it’s already happened. This govt has destroyed house prices there. Friend lost £200k on a town house they bought 15 years ago. 10yr old house are now worth 2/3 of what they were bought for. That’s net zero. If it happened in SE England they’d be marching on WM.

A 30 - 35% UK house price crash isn't coming. No high-LTV fragility left in the system. A crash that size wipes £3 - 4.5tn off household wealth - no government lets that happen. And rental yields pull capital back in long before prices fall that far. Structure doesn't support it. #UKHousing #PropertyMarket

@1sthand2 Lots of people do, but the vast majority very much don’t. They like having a nice car, they just don’t care for actually driving it. Why do you think so many people have been over the moon about developments in self driving? Yeah they want an auto, they want it all to be auto

“Oh but a DSG is so good these days” I genuinely do not give a fuck. Every auto I’ve driven outside of a huge luxury barge has been disappointing, DSG, TC, single clutch or otherwise. I don’t care if the car comes with £5k in the boot, I’m not buying another fucking auto
Alex Twinspark@ATwinspark

I’m willing to concede that the gearbox in the Land Rover is a bit pants but even so, a third pedal never inconvenienced me enough to put up with the sheer annoyance of an automatic. Why are they so dimwitted? And they flatly take away half the joy of driving
