Peace and happiness… Buddha said that the source of all suffering is desire. I found that to be irrefutably true. In my 20s, I was determined to be the next Stephen King. I wanted to earn millions and become famous for my writing. As I continued to fail at achieving that, I was profoundly depressed and unhappy, even though I had so much to be happy for. I accepted that I would never make a living as a writer, so I started and grew a business. It made me more money than I ever thought possible not writing fiction. But I wasn’t satisfied. I wanted more. I wanted to be a multimillionaire. I wanted to own two or three homes. So I kept working for that. I desired it. And I was very depressed and unhappy when Covid derailed that train, even though I had already achieved more than I ever thought possible. After, I survived untreated by BiPolar and severe addictions, and that gave me a new perspective on happiness and peace. I don’t need to make millions of dollars and become famous. In fact, I would probably turn those things down if they were offered to me now. What matters to me most is my family, my sobriety, my mental health, and being able to provide a stable, comfortable income for my family. So Buddha was correct. I have removed all desire from my heart, and I am no longer suffering. I hope many human iterations in Earth-Time can recognize this simple change and benefit from it.
