@shagbark_hick If you have that much land, you probably have enough political power to keep things manageable. And even if you sold down from a township to a section, that's still more than enough.

@2aQueer This doesn't exist. If you have large acreage, they can fly drones over it at will, and they can increase your assessment and property taxes as they like. Total fantasy to imagine that large acreage is anything resembling a guarantee. It does help, but less than you'd think.

I believe I'm making my peace with the fact that buying a "forever home" is a stupid idea. Because you may plink down your life savings on your dream property only to find that one day, the taxes triple, or they put solar farms all around you, or that they clear-cut your favorite forest. You might find that the economy dies entirely and that everybody leaves; or that the economy grows exponentially and sprawl covers everything you loved about that place. Gentrification, migration, drastic political change, ecological fallout of development, natural disasters, crime waves -- the risks are innumerable and are strategically impossible to plan for. I just actually have zero faith in the idea that there is anywhere sufficiently stable in all of America where becoming deeply invested in "rootedness" and a "forever home" is wise, reasonable, or justified. Blessed is he who remains (very) light on his feet -- particularly when he is living in "interesting times." One could argue that there is honor in "standing and fighting," etc etc, but I simply do not see it. Much as I love NYS, I do not think there is any honor in staying here because the problems are intractable. And at any time, in any other haven I may find, there is no iron-clad way to ensure that the same problems NYS has won't find their way there. In fact, a sober look at the trends shows it'd be likely.

This is one of the things I hate most about all the “pepper spray alternatives” and everyone advocating for them. Ignore that they’re ineffective and offer no meaningful benefit over pepper spray. They’re also legally problematic. Pepper spray is specifically designed to be really good at taking people out of the fight WITHOUT being readily capable of inflicting death or serious bodily harm. Pepper spray won’t permanently blind you or give you chemical burns or damage your lungs or poison you if you’re a normal person and it’s used against you as intended. This is a problem because pepper spray is for those situations where you need to use some force in self defense, but deadly force would be unjustified. And in situations where you are justified in using deadly force, almost any other deadly weapon would be safer and more effective. Like, you know, a gun. Telling people to use random aerosol chemicals instead of pepper spray will get them hurt, imprisoned, or killed. Stop it.
