Fun 30-miler in the sun today. Pic#1 shows Walton Bridge, past which today's route led. It is known for the notorious Walton Bridge Monster. According to locals it is a hundred-year old, ten-foot (3m) long Wels catfish with an exceptionally bad temper and absolutely no manners. Years ago I was stand-up paddleboarding past the bridge when suddenly something heavy bumped into my board from below at high speed, almost throwing me into the water. These catfish from Downunder were intentionally released into the Thames a hundred years ago to spice up the game for sports anglers. The largest recorded ones in the Thames were just under seven foot (2m) and weighed in at 190lbs (85kg). On more than one occasion over the years, catfish carcasses washed onto the riverbank had initially been mistaken for human bodies, causing great alarm. In Italy, they caught a catfish ten years ago, who was much bigger, weighing in at almost 800lbs (350kg). The fish pose no serious risk to healthy, adult humans with swimming skills, but are known to have given swimmers a bit of a scare.

I try to stay at dog friendly hotels. Not because I have a dog, but because I love them so much I like to sometimes hang around the communal water bowl in the lobby to see who comes by 👀🐶
