New EU data shows that #roadsafety in Ireland continues to decline. In 2025, there were 34 deaths per million people up 7% on 2024 and 31% on 2019. The EU average is 43 per million, but it is falling: down 3% year-on-year and about 15% since 2019. transport.ec.europa.eu/news-events/ne…

Some Dublin street lamps have been lighting these streets for over 100 years. Quiet survivors of another Dublin. They’ve outlived generations and are still working away every night.

A doorfietsroute (high-quality cycling route) is designed to enable fast, safe, comfortable cycling over longer distances. Per CROW, five characteristics define them. Together, these elements ensure cycling becomes a competitive alternative to the car, especially for commuting.🧵

Luxembourg is the world’s first nation to offer free public transport for all, tackling traffic and climate change in one bold move. Luxembourg has pioneered a bold new era in urban mobility by becoming the first nation on Earth to eliminate fares across its entire public transport network. This groundbreaking policy covers every bus, tram, and train route nationwide, offering free rides to residents, cross-border commuters, and visitors alike. Financed through general taxation rather than ticket sales, the initiative was designed to tackle the country's severe traffic congestion—once among the worst in Europe per capita—and to sharply cut carbon emissions from road transport. By removing the cost and hassle of tickets, Luxembourg effectively turned public transit into a basic public service, as essential and accessible as clean water or electricity. The impact has been profound and measurable. Ridership surged as people left their cars behind, leading to noticeably less road traffic, shorter commute times, and a meaningful drop in urban air pollution. While first-class rail options remain a paid upgrade for those wanting extra comfort, the standard second-class system is now truly seamless: hop on, hop off, no barriers. Luxembourg's experiment has demonstrated that removing financial obstacles can drive a genuine shift toward sustainable travel habits. It has also served as an inspiring model for other countries and cities grappling with sprawl, gridlock, and climate goals. In an age when radical solutions are needed to address the mobility-climate crisis, Luxembourg proves that treating public transport as a universal right is not only feasible—it can be genuinely transformative.

We're implementing the largest expansion of Sammy’s Law in city history: lowering speed limits to 15 MPH at every eligible school by the end of our first term. And we’re not waiting to get started. This year, we’re lowering speed limits at 800 additional locations to 15 MPH, bringing the citywide total for School Slow Zones to nearly 1,300 by the close of 2026. New York City’s streets should be the safest in the world - especially for kids - and City Hall is using every tool at our disposal to make that a reality as quickly as possible.

Children hit by an SUV when walking and cycling have a 77% higher chance of being killed than when hit by a smaller passenger car. That rises to 209% more chance of being killed by an SUV for kids under the age of nine. That's why I've asked @TfL to do more research on the growing impact of supersized SUVs in our city.

The National Transport Authority has published the findings of the latest survey of walking, wheeling and cycling in the Waterford Metropolitan Area, which reveals that 78% of residents favour additional investment in walking and wheeling, up from 68% in 2023, while 74% support further investment in cycling, up from 63%. The Index’s findings show growing public support for active travel, with 51% of adult residents wanting to walk or wheel (meaning the use of a wheelchair or mobility scooter) more and 32% want to cycle more. The survey shows that 45% of adults in Waterford are walking and wheeling at least five days a week and 12% cycle at least once a week. 86% of residents support building more cycle tracks physically separated from traffic and pedestrians, even where that means less room for other traffic, up from 76% in 2023. The Waterford Metropolitan Area Walking and Cycling Index is based on an independent, demographically representative survey of 1,112 residents aged 16 and over from across the Metropolitan Area, centred on Waterford City and its suburbs in County Kilkenny. Importantly, it reflects the views not only of those who already walk, wheel or cycle, but of the wider community. The public and elected councillors must demand more from Irish local authorities who love road paint and plastic bollards as a tick-box for 'infrastructure'. What about quality, aesthetic, road safety, lifespan, and having some pride in their work instead of cheap and grim?
Daragh Cassidy@DaraghCassidy

You’d have hoped the council could come up with something better than dirty plastic wands for the city’s main thoroughfare. We need to start moving beyond these “temporary” measures.
