Well-placed source says Chief of Defence Staff has "lost the confidence of No. 10" and "stands a good chance of requesting early retirement. ... He has failed to give the PM military capability, but also diplomatic and political credibility." @spectator #selection-1899.0-1899.90" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">archive.is/93NE8#selectio…

I think we should be able to defend our airbases - be it in the UK or overseas - without needing to deploy a Royal Navy destroyer for area air defence, 3 Royal Navy helicopters for swatting drones, and 1 Royal Navy helicopter for airborne early warning. Is that too much to ask?

NEW with Bloomberg Russia team: — Russia is dismayed by US and Israeli attacks on Iran but mostly powerless to aid its ally, and sees potential benefits for its war on Ukraine, according to five people familiar with the matter. — Demand for air-defence missiles from Gulf states means there may be fewer resources for Ukraine, while US weapons sales for use by Kyiv may slow if the Iran war becomes prolonged, two of the people said. — While the downfall of another ally after Assad and Maduro is a loss for Putin, the jump in energy prices, if sustained, may help ease pressure on Russia’s budget deficit and boost his ability to fund the war in Ukraine. It comes at an increasingly desperate time for Russia’s economy. — Discounts on Russian oil that doesn’t need to go through the Strait of Hormuz to reach key markets in India and China may narrow now, supporting the Kremlin’s revenue. It remains to be seen whether this will last long enough to significantly help Russia. — While Putin may not have known the full extent of Trump’s plans, Russian officials were given a strong steer by Israeli counterparts about the seriousness of his intentions in Iran in the weeks before the operation, other people with knowledge of the matter said. — As with Maduro, Putin has done little to aid his ally Iran beyond criticising the US operation, they said. bloomberg.com/news/articles/…

Apple TV has unveiled first-look photos for “Star City,” the upcoming “For All Mankind” spinoff series that explores the same story from Russia's point of view. The series will debut with two episodes May 29 on Apple TV, running through July 10. wp.me/pc8uak-1lGX9S

Stalemate: Why the Sukhoi Su-75 Was Always Bullshit, and Will Never Happen, story here: hushkit.substack.com/p/stalemate-wh…

A major 2025 NATO exercise in Estonia (Hedgehog) exposed serious weaknesses in how the alliance would fight a high-intensity drone war like Ukraine’s. Despite involving 16,000 troops from 12 countries, NATO forces were rapidly overwhelmed by a small Ukrainian-led “enemy” team using real battlefield tactics and Ukraine’s AI-enabled Delta targeting system. In one scenario, NATO units advanced without adapting to drone transparency: “It was all destroyed.” A 10-person Ukrainian adversary team mock-destroyed 17 armored vehicles in half a day. Overall results were described as: “Horrible” for NATO forces. One commander reportedly concluded: “We are f—cked.” Source: WSJ

Reminder that the MiG-25 was absolutely a paper tiger that sparked the rush to design one of the most successful multi-role platforms to date. Even the F-15EX being produced today.
