Julie Hyman’s grandfather survived nine different Nazi concentration camps during the Holocaust. After liberation he came to America, became a plasterer, and worked on Carnegie Hall and the Statue of Liberty, having children, then grandchildren, and achieving a made-in-America, Jewish immigrant’s dream. One of his grandchildren, Hyman, grew up to become a successful attorney in the Bronx and stayed there, remaining true to her roots. That is what so many Jewish immigrants have done in New York City since the 19th Century— planting themselves somewhere in the five boroughs and deepening their ties, generation after generation, giving back as much as they can along the way to the country — and city — that gave their families so much. Hyman has stayed, too, practicing family and divorce law in the Bronx the past 27 years, helping local residents thrive rather than moving to Manhattan in pursuit of bigger legal fees. Raised in Riverdale, the neighborhood at the northwest tip of the borough with a large Jewish population, Hyman wanted to serve the community she came from, and so opened a home office at the Solaria, the all-glass luxury building on the west side of Riverdale she calls home. For years her life felt idyllic, walking her dog on the same streets she walked as a kid, helping out her elderly parents who live across the street, and attending Riverdale Temple, the nearby reform shul where she is a member. Then, on the Friday before Passover, Hyman discovered a rock had blasted a hole in her living room window. “It looks like a gunshot,” she told AFTER OCTOBER 7 recently. In Los Angeles, a mob of pro-Palestinian activists swarmed a car, violently ripped an Israeli flag from it, and set it on fire. This wasn’t protest. This was pure, ugly xenophobic hate. Attacking people and burning flags in the street isn’t activism, it’s thuggery.

BREAKING: in recent weeks, some DNC members have privately discussed trying to force Chair Martin out of the job, according to three people familiar with these conversations. The idea was put on hold after members failed to identify an alternative candidate willing to step into the role. scoop from @Lauren_V_Egan thebulwark.com/p/new-drama-in…
