@Dango_Demon I think it’s very young people who from being in or just out of school their brain is primed to see one year age as a big gap. Once you hit your late 20s you realize minor age gaps are less and less relevant the older you get.

Do people just not realize that a 2-3 years age gap is normal in most relationships that adults are in?

That's because you only watch Shonen a genre targeted at boys 12 to 18. That's like dipping your toes in the kiddie pool and telling people you went swimming. There are somewhere between 17 and 20 anime this season alone with female protagonists. Maybe if you watch those you wouldn't have time to whine about wanting more female protagonists.

@8bitTengu Checked if this claim holds up using the AniList API. Fetched 100 pages, around 5,000 anime. Solo MCs: Female: 971 Male: 938 With multiple MCs: Female: 3,556 Male: 3,523 463 had other-gender MCs, 43 had no main characters.
