When it rains, the airport uses several stormwater facilities to capture the water and manage and control the quantity and quality of stormwater leaving the airport.
Our biggest, the Moores Creek Stormwater Management Facility, can hold 42 million litres of water in underground tanks, and an additional 42 million litres in ponds above ground. That’s a combined equivalent of 33 Olympic-sized swimming pools.
When constructed in 2001, it was one of the largest concrete pours in Canada!
Here’s a snippet of what the underground tanks look like. (Those water marks on the poles are about 10 feet high).

Today we’re planning for nearly 1,000 arriving or departing flights, with this morning’s start-up expected to include around 120 departing flights between 7 a.m. and 9:59 a.m.
Our specialists are keeping an eye on today’s forecast, which shows a band of thunderstorms expected to sweep over the GTA early this evening.
This storm could bring winds up to 84km/h, heavy thunderstorms, heavy downpours (possibly 20mm of rain in an hour) and hail. ⛈️
With severe weather comes the chance that airlines may cancel flights.
