@TheRochaSays @obsurdist I honestly believe 100% that ALIEN:COVENENT was a big pair of middle fingers to everyone who complained that PROMETHEUS wasn't the direct prequel they wanted.

@obsurdist I feel that way about Ridley’s recent Alien movies and no one can convince me otherwise. Just like Hans Gruber, he may be an excellent thief, but he’s still a thief.

I just don’t get why filmmakers like #RidleyScott (who have spotty track records, at best, if we’re being HONEST) feel the need to criticize superhero films. If you look at Ridley’s words here, it’s mystifying how unaware he is of his own work. He’s directed a lot of “boring as shit” films with terrible scripts that rely on special effects to save them. Let’s get real: LEGEND - Undercooked and saved by Tim Curry makeup job as Darkness SOMEONE TO WATCH OVER ME- Decent but forgettable 1492- An offensive mess of a film WHITE SQUALL- Aloof, distant and boring HANNIBAL - Ugh. The less said here… KINGDOM OF HEAVEN (Original Cut) - Another mess of a historical film A GOOD YEAR- Fine but meh ROBIN HOOD- Boring, full of itself and a miscast Russell Crowe PROMETHEUS- Ridiculously pretentious THE COUNSELOR- An utter and confounding mess EXODUS: GODS AND KINGS- Offensively terrible for so many reasons and boring for other reasons ALIEN: COVENANT- I mean WTF?! NAPOLEON- Great battle scenes but ultimately a soulless film Now, I’m not saying Ridley isn’t an incredible filmmaker who hasn’t made some classic films that we all love because, of course, he has. Blade Runner is forever in my Top 15! And there are many more of his films that I love. BUT he doesn’t have the track record or resume to come for superhero movies like this. If we’re being BRUTALLY honest, he’s batting around the same percentage with his movies as superhero movies are batting with theirs. And superhero films have recently embraced SOME level of diversity in terms of POC in their lead protagonist roles. Ridley has rarely done that with American Gangster being the most notable example. Pretentiously artistic yet soulless films and superhero movies that feel factory made yield the same results: bad to terrible movies. One set of films doesn’t get style points to put it over the top over another set of films. In the end, this is a pot and kettle situation. I wish more old school filmmakers would just leave superhero films alone and have some honest self awareness of their own work. There are some damn good filmmakers involved in creating superhero films and their work shouldn’t just be roundly dismissed in a clueless generalization. Sure, they don’t all work, but they don’t deserve the hate these older filmmakers bestow upon them.

@TheRochaSays Here's a hot take: I don't think he's that good of a filmmaker at all and is tremendously overrated. I think he just got lucky a couple of times. ALIEN is my favorite work of his and he kind of stole that from Dan O'Bannon. Want boring? Go watch RAISED BY WOLVES.
