My LYFT driver tonight told me I was his first ride in 30 minutes and it was extremely slow. Usually these drivers have their next pickups lined up before they drop their current ride off.

@SharylAttkisson This is unfortunately nothing new here (and I suspect most large cities). I have personally been advised to leave an area and my friend has been told the direction to leave after leaving a convenience store.

Based on my recent reporting trip to Minneapolis (and we were told as much by the locals), it is unsafe for people who are white and not known to key people in the area to be in certain neighborhoods or stores. If you are not accompanied by a known local, you may be profiled, followed/tracked, approached and questioned by people who will demand answers but not tell you who they are, told you "don't belong," told to leave, and/or made to feel threatened. I'm talking about peacefully going to public places in an open society. I was surprised, too.

@akoustov In my experience, if you add the quoted phrases "I made a pizza" and "cute kitty" to any post, it will land at the top of any Bsky user's timeline. Unless it's just me. (I've never used those phrases, but that's my Vitality Plan going forward.)

My sincere call to fellow academics with a modicum of integrity who are still on Bsky: LEAVE NOW. Folks are free to use whatever platform they choose, but Bsky is absolutely a cancer for intellectual conversation on any topic that even slightly veers outside of the prevailing consensus. You get a mob of anonymous trolls and professors calling you names, questioning your integrity, and accusing you of all possible sins over an article they didn't bother to read. You've all seen previously the calls to fire me in response to my tentative thoughts about AI use in academia, and if you think that was an anomaly, look at how the same people reacted to my recent Atlantic piece: over a hundred of unhinged quote posts like this one. I have no problem with serious criticism of my work, but not one of these people engaged with a single argument in the actual article. And the worst part is the silence of people who should know better, who see this happen every day and never say a word because they're afraid to become the next target of the mob. I'm sorry, but this is all utterly pathetic. All social media is bad, but if you really need to post somewhere about your research, do it on LinkedIn.
