In the last 3 minutes of Burn Island Eruption 2, an extremely significant and sustained spike in traffic (above 10K requests per minute) from a single location was detected by the VeeFriends tech team. After further investigation, it was determined the Burn Island page was experiencing a malicious Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack.
This type of cyber attack involves overwhelming a server or network with a sudden and large flood of traffic, making it unable to function properly. As a result, the online bid was disrupted and was no longer accessible to most users.
We understand this is frustrating to some participants, and we want to assure you that we take these attacks very seriously. Our team has implemented ways to scale our web experiences and protect against these types of attack, including 27 web services and websites built using .NET Core 7, encapsulated in highly efficient Docker containers and managed by Kubernetes. We can handle large-scale concurrency and load distribution with Microsoft's Orleans technology. We use Azure Cosmos DB, with its industry-leading low latency, high throughput, and 99.999% availability, as well as Azure Cognitive Search, Front Door, and Azure Container Services, for blazing-fast storage, search, firewall, DNS, load balancing, failover, and scale-out scenarios.
But as you can imagine, you can’t protect against all of them if someone has extreme ill intent. We will be continuing to audit this attack and the ways in which we can better protect future auctions from bad actors.
After carefully reviewing all available options, we have decided to count the last confirmed bids as the winners. This decision is what we feel is best considering the circumstances, particularly in light of the malicious attack.
Additionally, We are reviewing and confirming the results with the IMX team as there is an API discrepancy they are working on and will report on the final leaderboard as soon as possible or an update on where we stand with IMX tomorrow at 11 AM ET.
We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused and want to reassure our users that there are many more Burn Island eruptions to come and that we are committed to the integrity of all future auctions. We remain committed to providing all our users with a safe and secure experience.
Thank you.
