The Sweetness of Thiruvanmiyur: A Thread 1/ There are few places my sister never misses to visit when she is in India. One such is In a quiet corner of Thiruvanmiyur, away from the honking Fiats and the self-importance of the city, lies a small shrine. It belongs to Sakkarai Amma

Not just Congress, but even CPI(M) is acknowledging that this is the first time there have been free & fair elections without violence. Gyanesh Kumar has delivered unthinkable. @ECISVEEP deserves a huge applause.

#WATCH | Kolkata | On exit polls for West Bengal Assembly Elections, Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya, CPI(M) candidate for the Jadavpur Assembly constituency, says, "...Let us wait till the fourth and see what happens. Her (West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee) frustration is obvious because her goons were not able to have a free hand this time. Since 2011 onwards, till today, the elections have been controlled by TMC goons. After 11 a.m., all the booths were taken over by them, these goons, and they used to control. Now this time they failed and that's the frustration and fear of Mamta...This time, the Police had discharged their basic obligation and probably they got the courage since the central force was over there. I didn't find that the central force acted in any objectionable manner..."

I see the Jaljivan website every few months, and it always gives me great happiness. Anyone who has lived in rural / semi-urban areas can understand what tapwater means, a luxury which we take for granted today.

TN political landscape is witnessing a seismic shift. @TodaysChanakya is also projecting 30% vote share for Vijay on debut. This could force Congress to pivot toward TVK or see Vijay strike a pragmatic "Jagan-style" deal with the Center. The Dravidian duopoly is under threat.

@Chandrakbose Crony capitalism thrived when it was license permit quota Raj. Today anyone can start a business. There are so many unicorns founded by my juniors from B School. I remember how difficult it was to raise capital when I started my own business 25 years back.

High turnout in #WestBengalElection seen by both TMC & BJP as favouring them. Vote suppression helps BJP. TMC counts on Bengalis defending their culture/ethnicity against Hindutva. Is this Battle of Plassey II, after winning which in June 1757, the Brits enslaved India. A win can strengthen BJP’s reach beyond Hindi-belt. A loss can trigger opposition’s rallying.

People celebrating high turnout in Bengal. But given due to the SIR process, the dead/displaced voters have been removed, that means denominator has shrunken, that will automatically lead to high turnout numbers right?

In Tamil Nadu, the reduction in voter rolls was even larger, ~10%. I expect a 6% increase in the absolute number of voters due to the weekday, star power (Vijay), and closer elections compared to last time. So turnout will be substantially higher this time.

Voter turnout will be higher everywhere, as voter rolls were recently cleaned up by removing dead, duplicate, fake & relocated voters, reducing the denominator. Instead of turnout, compare the number of voters with historical figures. I expect 5% increase in voters & 92% turnout.

IMPORTANT: record voter turnout in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu. Conventional wisdom: higher voter turnout out=anti incumbency. BUT in last decade, turnouts across many states have generally been higher and incumbents can also gain. Net net: wait till results day May 4. I expect one MAJOR surprise, the other 3 are more predictable. 🙏

People speculating on unprecedented 92 % voter turnout. This figure would have been 83% if 7 million had not been deleted.

Excellent arguments by Dr @ARanganathan72 on women reservation bill. In a democracy we can’t dilute power of a voter because her state has lower per capita income or higher TFR Imagine applying same logic on voter identity groups

The Prime Minister's Office: Pakistan Defence Minister’s call for Israel’s annihilation is outrageous. This is not a statement that can be tolerated from any government, especially not from one that claims to be a neutral arbiter for peace.

@sardesairajdeep Exclusion from the draft voter roll does not mean loss of RIGHT TO VOTE When you do a massive cleanup exercise, you use some rules/criteria. There will be FALSE positives. That's why there are procedures of dispute resolution and objection handling. Pl do not spread fake news

IMPORTANT: When the Supreme Court sounds like the executive, we have a problem. A constitutional court can’t become an executive court. SIR hearing is a prime example. Lost in a political point scoring in the courtroom is a stark reality: lakhs of bona fide INDIAN CITIZENS may lose their RIGHT TO VOTE. Case in point: the Constitution illustrator's grandson, his wife, no less, found themselves excluded from voter roll! barandbench.com/news/west-beng…
