Emekli Büyükelçi Altay Cengizer aramızdan -vakitsiz- ayrıldı. 40 yılı aşan bir süreçte yakın dostum olan sevgili Altay, öncelikle iyi, temiz kalpli bir insan, çok da iyi bir diplomattı. Mükemmel İngilizcesi, derin kültürü, güçlü hafızası, espri, hiciv kabiliyeti akla ilk gelen özellikleriydi. Ülkemizi dünyada başarıyla temsil etti. Seçkin görevleri arasında UNESCO Genel Konferansı Başkanlığı da bulunuyor. Yazar/tarihçi yönüyle de çok nitelikli eserlere imza attı, Osmanlı İmparatorluğunun son dönemine ilişkin çalışmaları önemlidir. 1915 olayları konusunda ciddi akademik katkılar sağladı. Altay deyince şıklığı, zarafeti, kitapları, değerli koleksiyonları da hatırlanacak. Dışişleri Bakanlığının liyakat esasına göre seçilmiş kadrolarının öne çıkan vasıflı bir temsilcisiydi. Sevgili ailesine, dostlarına, Dışişleri camiasına sabırlar diliyorum. Ruhu şad, mekanı cennet olsun…
