What he means is that while killing yourself may not be on your mind today, he thinks it should be. Why? Because in the event that you or a loved one were to be afflicted with a terminal illness, he believes you should be afforded the right to demand that the state facilitates your sui*ide. He paints a picture of unbearable pain and suffering, as if both are inevitable for those with terminal illness. But this just isn't true. Most pain is well managed IF access to good palliative care is available. That over 100,000 people die every year without being afforded access to that care is not a failure of medicine; it is a failure of the state to provide that care, and a failure of governments to facilitate the economic growth required to fund it. There is nothing 'compassionate' or 'gentle' about state-facilitated death. What could be more cruel and brutal than ending a human life because the state has decided certain lives just aren't worth living, aren't worth the resources, and that eliminating them before they become a cost burden is now a priority?
