A very good first discussion with @andyburnham. We are both committed to bringing the EU and the UK closer and closer. Together, we will work towards a successful Summit that delivers for our businesses, our young people and our shared security. And we will continue our excellent cooperation in support of Ukraine. Europe is stronger when the EU and the UK work side by side.

People who own their own home sell it to help pay the costs of living in a care home as my parents did.I helped them find a high quality private sector home. I do not see why taxpayers should have to pay when many elderly can afford the care home. The NHS is still free for all.

An interesting discussion in the Guardian on installing solar panels on car parks. With the Government and NESO pushing for the installation of tens of gigawatts of solar generation capacity to achieve net zero, solar carparks are frequently overlooked in favour of massive solar farms, which devastate rural communities and ride roughshod over residents' wishes. It is estimated that building solar panels on car parks could offer an additional 12-24 GW of capacity, representing between a quarter and a half of the Government's targets for 2030. Countries like France already require solar panels to be installed in car parks over a certain size, and it is past time we do the same. theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2…

@stuey_beef Don’t forget they’re allowed to take their enhanced state pension (which is what it is as paid for from taxation) early as well, between 55-60

More than 70,000 retired public sector workers are on pensions above £50,000 a year, and almost 4,000 enjoy more than £100,000 annually – guaranteed, inflation‑linked, backed by the full power of the state. These aren’t one‑off anomalies; they are a structural feature of a system designed to shower the top of the public sector with lifetime security, regardless of economic reality for everyone else. Try telling a delivery driver, a care worker, or a small‑business owner who’s never had a pension that they must subsidise five‑figure and six‑figure state‑sector pensions forever because “the rules say so”. Try telling a generation locked out of home ownership that they must accept higher taxes and worse services so a political and bureaucratic class can retire early on packages the private sector stopped offering years ago. Yes, many ordinary public‑sector workers retire on modest pensions. That truth is routinely weaponised by defenders of the system to obscure the existence of this pension aristocracy at the top – the people whose lavish deals drive the biggest costs, whose interests Labour is most keen to protect, and whose comfort is quietly prioritised over the needs of struggling families staring at rising tax bills and decaying public services.

UK climate changes are 'unprecedented'. Last four years in UK are in top five hottest on record. Heatwaves the norm and it will get hotter. Time to actually do something? Anyone still denying is an enemy of humanity. theguardian.com/environment/20…

Right then … as Ross Clark points out, the claim that 2,700 people were killed by the heat is bollocks. (Technical term) It was presented as an actual death toll. It wasn’t. It was a modelling exercise and er.… not actual mortality UKHSA found NO excess mortality during the May heatwave. And in the 2 published ONS weeks covering most of June’s heatwave, death registrations were actually 918 BELOW expected. But the hysterical headlines pushed the narrative as if it was fact. As always, question everything.

@latimeralder The Roman and Medieval warm periods were just local events not climate change but this year's heat may be local but it is definitely climate change.

@PositivFuturist I believe Affinity Water may be stating that the hosepipe ban in my area (Hertfordshire) is with immediate effect. However, the statutory notice they have published says that the ban comes in on Friday 17th. Hope they are not telling porkies.

The correct way to respond to a hosepipe ban is to fill your paddling pool, run your sprinkler and a bath. They can fuck off. It's important we run out to highlight the fact that infrastructure is overstretched and needs to be built out.

@Iromg Mike. I will not put into words the rage I am feeling over this atrocity as said words would not be fitting in a thread about this lady. At an appropriate moment, would you be able to identify a charity or cause that Ann supported so that a donation could be made in her memory?

I have acquired an air conditioner with a tube thing that goes out of the window. Our bedroom more closely resembles the temperature of a rainforest at dawn than that of Satans ball bag. I want you to be as happy about that as I am. Its delightful.
