@TomAandTom1 And yet it’s not critic proof in the way it once was, or in the way other genres have been at various times. Original horror doesn’t succeed with bad reviews the way action and comedy/romance consistently could 20 years ago, slashers in the 80s, westerns in the 50s/60s etc

@spetersaunders @RyanFcknGosling Today’s horror movies are grim, gory, sometimes unpleasant, but never legitimately dangerous or transgressive the way many of the ones from the 70s and 80s were. They’re just another safe space now, and the way all movie culture revolves around them has become tiresome.

@RyanFcknGosling If it comes off to you as pretentious, that means you're watching it. Which suggests you're falling for hype, given you say you care little for the genre.

Am I the only one who cares the least about the horror genre? Why's everyone always so hyped about it?

@ComicsCuts Maybe Bond needs a break from the brutal self-loathing thing and needs to focus simply on building fun action/adventures around an actor with physical presence.

People who want Henry Cavill to play James Bond need to explain why. He’s too sincere and kind and doesn’t have the darkness in him to play a cold and detached killer who is indifferent about his own life. He’s wrong for the role and it’s a dumb idea.

@MccoyNeal99884 @dicknsn Just like Longlegs, Weapons, Lee Cronin’s Mummy, Undertone, Bring Her Back, Companion, When Evil Lurks, The Oddity, The Dark & Wicked, First Omen, The Substance, Barbarian, X, The Ugly Stepsister, Smile 2, Red Rooms. Overhyped horror slop of the month.

It’s because the formerly cool website where everyone used to spend their time telling jokes and bullshitting about movies got purchased by a human sinkhole then turned into a machine that hands out nickels to the dumbest people on earth whenever they issue the wettest fart
Kristen Lopez@kristenklopez

Contemplating a piece for TFM on why everyone is crashing out over THE ODYSSEY (not just the E*on of it all but the "dad" discourse, accents, etc.). My question: what is it about this movie that is making it such a lightning rod for discussion? Is it the Nolan? Or something else?

@DustinPutman @JosephKahn Things like Michael and Devil Wears Prada 2 are what keep the industry alive (not Obsession), and this weekend had no new releases on their scale.

@JosephKahn Imagine saying everyone is asleep at the wheel when Curry Barker just released a generational horror film this weekend called OBSESSION that everyone is talking about on a budget of $750K.

@FreddyInSpace @PaulRobinson33 Yes, the box office is less than 25% of some of the year’s worst-reviewed films, one of which is beating it this weekend. Very impressive. Less than the opening for the Markiplier movie, tho I don’t think his fans mind admitting that they’re a bubble. Talk about moving goalposts.

I think there's a difference between Obsession and a lot of the other horror movies in recent years that general audiences ended up feeling were "over-hyped." It's a crowd-pleaser. Fully satisfying mass appeal crowd-pleaser. I don't expect to see the usual backlash to this one.

@FreddyInSpace @PaulRobinson33 The box office totals suggest that no one outside of Letterboxd cinephile culture even knows this movie exists. What % of the population contributes to RT scores and cinema scores? Some microscopic fraction. That’s what I mean when I say Bubble.

@AlphOmegaDom @PaulRobinson33 A- CinemaScore. 94% Rotten Tomatoes both from critics and fans. Obviously not EVERYONE is going to love any movie but all possible metrics reflect my bubble. So. That's really all I can go on.

@TomAandTom1 Doesn’t the multiplex theater care more about the total number of customers coming through, buying concessions etc?

@PaulRobinson33 It's really wild. I'm sure that'll change a bit in the coming days, always does, but for now it's pretty great to see everyone united over loving this movie.

Was planning to go to the theater but here's no major movie opening this weekend. Everyone's asleep at the wheel. Hollywood used to open bangers in May.

@Bmk6971 @Noodlebrokeback @JosephKahn How does keeping the films’ budgets low help the theaters? I thought the important thing was for movie theaters to survive and become healthy again.

@Noodlebrokeback @JosephKahn And that was in a world with no social media. If the movies you’re defending actually had the quality and mass appeal of The Exorcist, they would also be making a billion now.

@Noodlebrokeback @JosephKahn And without them the entire industry will eventually collapse and you won’t have any movies of any kind. How the hell did we get to a place where $15 mil is a “huge success” for a major studio movie opening in MAY??
