The story of how a British guy stole tea from China is really funny. He spoke Chinese and hired a local guide, then got the right haircut and clothes. When he approached people he said he was from a distant province beyond the wall and they were like yeah seems legit

P.S.: Vasily Kashin believes Russia should focus on its strategic confrontation with the West instead of endlessly fighting for Malaya Tokmachka "in pursuit of imaginary goals"—a reference to a notorious battle over a small village that has been going on since 2023

Vasily Kashin argues that Russia cannot achieve its original "special military operation" goals (he doesn't think it's a failure) & should make peace under conditions discussed in Alaska—the first such acknowledgement from a prominent Russian expert globalaffairs.ru/articles/chugu… 1/5

@FerdinandLejeu3 True. Seems to be that the Anglo capacity for whiggishness is greater than their capacity for toryism. Abolitionism also originated in Britain. But this too is measured — no radical republicans since Cromwell, at least until recently.

this is such a strange talking point. germans may be "autistic" in many ways but when it comes to *ideology* they are very flexible and pragmatic, which is how you end up with "conservative welfare state" or "national socialism". ideology-maxxing is more of an anglo thing.

@AkkadSecretary How do you explain the complete collapes in most Muslim countries including countries with very few womens rights? UAE 1.2 Turkey and Saudi Arabia - massive, fast and dramatic falls - some of the fastest in the world.

Some will blame anything for the fertility crisis just to avoid confronting the problem. It's womens rights. If you want high fertility you gotta abolish them, otherwise shut up.
Arpit Gupta@arpitrage

Very nice piece by @jburnmurdoch makes a case for smartphones being responsible for the fertility decline, through channels like • pure time displacement • changing (gendered) norms • decreased socialization

@mmjukic In Denmark, the highly educated women are having the most kids. They are taller and smarter than average, this is eugenics. The decline in fertility rate is only because >33% of women with primary school as highest educational achievement are childless now x.com/N0MoreParties/…
Skandinavian Researcher@N0MoreParties

In Denmark, the fertility rate has declined from 1.9 in 2008 to 1.5 in 2025. Largely because, as this graph shows, almost 33% of women with primary school as their highest educational attainment are childless nowadays. Highly educated women have a 1.9 fertility rate on average.

@TheMindScourge "seeking stability in a world that seemed anything" Common in the late 20th/early 21st century yet TFR remains historically low. Status is the major factor.

This is very interesting, but I’m skeptical that increased male status is the reason. A much better explanation (which is also debated) is WWII and this particular generation seeking stability in a world that seemed anything but (and which many assumed would be annihilated in a general nuclear exchange)
nfseverin@nfseverin1

The Baby Boom was caused by a unique period of high young male status compared to women, reflected in education and income levels.

@Jfrdydtdht When people think of America, they usually think of the USA, not the geographical entity America which was named first. You can redefine a term.

Merz's two most successful cabinet ministers – Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt and Economics Minister Katherina Reiche – provide some insight into what a German political correction might look like. Dobrindt keeps the lowest profile possible, he works to limit migration at the margins and gives the crazed leftoid SPD little to work with. Reiche pays lipservice to climatism while relentlessly publishing data that undermines the success of the energy transition and working to build out gas power generation in the background. The leftist programme has always had parareligious elements, by which I mean that it appeals to religious instincts while not explicitly putting itself forth as a religion. Correcting this insanity, at least in the early to intermediate stages, will depend a lot on allowing culturally dominant leftoids to maintain their nostrums publicly, while doing what is necessary behind the scenes to keep the economy and society minimally functional. The hope is that the leftist programme is promoted finally to an ethereal, almost supernatural amalgam of religious doctrines, which are necessarily detached from real-world imperatives. Green voters may practice self-abnegation, pilot their cargo bicycles across their cities, profess every Sunday in church that refugees are welcome, while quietly accepting the social and economic returns of more sensible policies engineered by other people. They get the space to do this while their political leaders are allowed to save face and nobody has to admit they were wrong anytime soon. It's not satisfying but it's probably the way forward for now.
