@Jonath4nH @ellie_huxtable Generally it is stored in a string format with the hash type, salt, and hashed value like $hashtype$salt$hash At least that's a pretty common defacto standard format.

@DustinFinn @ernieJohnston Ah k. I was about to say I think you can do it from root in Linux with ipmitool. But definitely need vga for that.

@ernieJohnston It’s weird. The battery. The “pads” that are to be shorted - connected together for 10s. Nothing has reset the IPMI password. So more cables arrive. Blasted VGA graphics card and no VGA monitor around. LoL.

So is there just no way to RESET the PASSWORD via Hardware on SuperMicro Motherboards for the IPMI ? I've done the unpowered power button hold for 15 seconds. I've done the BIOS reset by bridging the two solder pads on the motherboard. I do not have a monitor for this unit.

@nyanotech @Merocle @King_Owl I was always been curious if you could do this to avoid the need the have PHY chips on a switch. Since normally you have an Ethernet controller then a PHY for whatever media it uses. Just direct attaching USB eth controllers to a switch chip 🤔

@Merocle @King_Owl some enterprise equipment does this but with pcie to the host, look up “multi-host adapters” or “multi-host controllers”, for instance the intel fm10000

This is a bit serious. I really need your feedback. Long story short, I think Ethernet is a relic of the past and should be confined to walls and floors. Modern laptops and many devices are moving away from it in favor of Wi-Fi, which isn’t always convenient and ends up requiring adapters and dongles on desks. So I thought, what if we made a router with USB ports that essentially act as USB-to-Ethernet adapters inside the router? In my personal experience, this would be super cool for certain use cases. For example, at a conference booth, WiFi or Ethernet could be used as an uplink to the router. And the router could have a VPN set up to the company network. For a HomeLab, this is a pretty neat setup as a demo stand. And it would work just fine as a travel router, too. Would you like to see a device like this come to life? This could very well be the first hardware product from developers, made for developers. I mean, from JetBrains. On the technical side, I have some rough ideas for features and unique capabilities. For example, automatic detection of the WAN port regardless of where you plug in the network (the device has 2 Ethernet ports). I’d be happy to dive into the details in the near future. I’d appreciate it if you shared this post - if only because it adds a bit of variety to your feed, which I’m sure is full of AI content and news about AI, offering something tangible and practical.

@PoliceThePolic1 illegal to remove the boot and yes, removing the tire WITH the boot is also illegal, by the way, removing it is pointless as the car is in the system, will be flag, so good luck in your next drive.

@AndreTI @KelseyTuoc Traveling to a polling place is also a barrier, as is paying for postage. IDs are the norm today, and if it's so common to not have an ID why don't you know anyone without one?

@KelseyTuoc I'm fully on board as long as we make getting ID free and guaranteed by federal law. Advantageous for dems or not, no poll taxes. Also, we can't allow the kinds of shenanigans Kansas is doing with IDs for transgendered people if they're going to be required for the franchise.

As a female presenting person, I loathe computer shopping alone. EVERY SINGLE TIME. "You need to pay for set up?" "No. I got it." "You sure? It doesn't come set up." "I. Got. It."

@PatrickHeizer @arctotherium42 Hot take, but if we suddenly notice a lack of cancer cases among the very rich over the next few years, there are probably (already) clinics doing this behind closed doors.

@TrungTPhan It's literally the same screws apple has used in their devices for 15+ years. Every shop that handles Mac laptops or phones has them. 🤡

Apple‘a custom pentalobe screw so devious. 5-point flower shape design made to be “tamper resistant” but really just locked out third-party repair. Wildest part was not realizing it was custom and trying to use Torx screw, scratching it up and making it hard to open even with a proper pentalobe screw.

Apple’s $599 Neo looks like the most repairable Macbook ever: > modular pieces > swappable ports and keyboards > battery comes right out (no adhesive tabs or sticky glue) > no special screws (one of the most savage Apple moves) Phone Repair Guru swapped out every piece and it works fine. Hallelujah. *** Full vid here: youtu.be/Ma3mJ2R6OXo?si…

Your Dockerfile starts with 'FROM alpine' for minimalism and ends with 847MB because you needed one Python library that required build tools you forgot to remove.

Podcast was shorter last night. What kinda stinks is that there is just a lack of good news in our industry. A lot of doom and gloom and terrible prices on stuff that we like/want. I guess this is why I have dove into sim gear... interesting products at competitive prices.

@scriptjunkie1 @simongerman600 Eh. Household metrics are bad too because they find bottoms values where people build households specifically to afford housing. Individual metrics divided by working age population is probably cleaner for cleaning up actual parent-children households from the dataset.

Graphing everyone's hours vs pay only from bottom of *population* 95% is very misleading. In a population consisting of 4 person single earner households, you've just excluded the top 20% of households pay but not hours! US has more single earner households - e.g. Maryland has lower labor force participation rate than Switzerland, which skews per-person earnings but is more preferable at every level. Real median household income is a much better measure.

How to read this chart: the typical Belgian earns as much as the typical Californian but works about 24% less. Pretty smart move to calculate such data for the “bottom 95%” only. Worth exploring further. Source: sethackerman.substack.com

Fucking Time Machine salesman ripped me off. I bought a Time Machine from this guy and tried to go back in time to October 10th, 1582 but it didn’t work, saying “invalid date” or some such. Tried again using a hard override and it dumped me off the coast of Africa on 1/1/1970.
