@RaonakRN @lymanstoneky Why would people press blue at all? The only reason people need saving is if they press blue. If they don't press blue, there's no need to save them, as they get to live by pressing red.

@lymanstoneky 'everyone on earth privately' does imply EVERYONE so yes, this does include mentally ill, baby's, small children, illiterate, colorblind. I did assume everyone reads it in their own language tho and not in English.

@choffstein 'just requires everyone making the same selfish choice' brother, do you know the probability of everyone voting red? Its 0% btw. The probability of more than 50% voting blue is actually quite good and I wouldn't want to add into making that probability lower.

Red looks selfish until you realize: if everyone presses red, everyone lives. The "cooperative" answer requires coordination and trust. The "selfish" answer just requires everyone making the same selfish choice.
Tim Urban@waitbutwhy

Everyone in the world has to take a private vote by pressing a red or blue button. If more than 50% of people press the blue button, everyone survives. If less than 50% of people press the blue button, only people who pressed the red button survive. Which button would you press?

After the vote it is revealed that actually everyone that voted red dies to cleanse the world of the selfish people who are willing to sacrifice others to live and the world heals and becomes a better place.

I get really annoyed by people saying that the “rational” or “game theory” answer is to vote red here. This a coordination problem: there are two optimal outcomes: everyone votes red or >50% vote blue. People dying is (I hope) not an optimal outcome even for the red voters

@DrakeSnodgrass @iSkyzzle @cominginhot01 @quantum_geoff @publicinte The prompt is 'everyone on earth privately'. If you change the prompt obviously my take changes. If I'm on a ship with 200 people and everyone is engineers and hard working adults we might all push red. Then the problem becomes way harder tbh. Worldwide blue is a no brainer to me

@cominginhot01 @acidiclemon2 @iSkyzzle @quantum_geoff @publicinte Yes, at the cost of killing billions. If you believe everyone will vote red you're delusional. More than 50% vote red a lot of people die. Less than 50% vote blue a lot of people die. Voting red directly adds to the probability of people dieing. Voting blue adds to survival.

"Those selfish red button pressers wanna murder all of us blue button pressers!!! >:c" You're literally free to not press the "russian roulette for me pls" button; no benefit whatsoever to partaking in this pointless gamble Red: 42.1% Blue: 57.9% You can't make this shit up

@JohnBrown______ @Lloyd_Arthur_ @minordissent This is not true tho, because the only way people die is if more than 50% picks red. So red has a huge impact since the premise is 'everyone on earth privately' there is a guarantee a billions of people will pick blue. Picking blue becomes the only right answer imo.

@Lloyd_Arthur_ @minordissent A lot of blue-pressers fail to understand that the red button is practically non-functional. Only the blue button does something.

@minordissent No, the question I see is not 'would you risk your life to save others' it is: 'would you risk killing others to save your life when there is an option where nobody dies?' and yes, it is completely different.

This comes up every few months. It is -mind-boggling- that -anyone- would press anything but Red. This is not a morality test, it is an IQ test, and the majority is failing. Suicidally failing. People have been brain-washed to the point where they cannot allow themselves to think through an issue, they must immediately pull the lever that they predict will make them seem more virtuous to their social group. And your hesitation will be noticed. I think if the options were "Get a Red Ferrari" and "Get a Blue Brain Tumor" people would vote Blue before reading the second half of the option. Insane.

@Ancientswords The only way people die is if they personally choose blue. Liability for a bad outcome falls on the person with the most power to prevent it, which is the person voting blue and putting themselves in danger.

@iSkyzzle @cominginhot01 @quantum_geoff @publicinte Its a completely different situation. This analogy doesn't work at all. Vote blue = guaranteed everyone lives, with a small chance to die yourself. Vote red = guarantee to live while adding to the chance a lot of people die.

@dadoctaevil @cominginhot01 @quantum_geoff @publicinte Im saying because the only way anyone dies is if more than 50% vote red that every rational person votes blue. Favourable outcomes: Everyone votes blue, more people vote blue than red. Unfavorable outcomes: People vote red (with the exception of getting 100%, which is impossible

@Gnedfludap @redtachyon No, voting red creates the problem. The only way people die is if more than 50% of people vote red. There is no other way. Idk how anyone can ever vote red when blue is always safe unless more than 50% of the voters is an idiot.

@redtachyon Choosing blue is a solution that creates the exact problem that it was made to solve. The only reason to pick blue is because someone else picked blue. Don't pick blue, and nobody needs to pick blue.

If you push the red button, you get $100. If you push the blue button, you get $100 if over half of people push the blue button and otherwise get nothing.
