@HDRgameAnalysis @assassinscreed On the LG G5, in Game Optimizer mode, with HGIG enabled, warn 40, set the maximum brightness to 2300 nits, and the exposure to 0.0 as it comes default, but I notice the night image very dark.

@Dk06C @HDRgameAnalysis I just played the first scene on the night boat, with the G5, hgig enabled, game optimizer mode, warn 40, 2300 nits in hdr setting and exposure in 0.0 (default) and I see the image very dark with little detail in the shadows.

Preliminary HDR analysis and setup guide for Assassin’s Creed Black Flag: Resynced on PS5 Pro (most likely the same on Xbox and PC). I only tested the first few hours of the game on PS5 Pro, including day and night scenes. I will update this analysis if relevant, as I get further into the game. I will look at PC later. Its not yet released. Let me start by saying; it’s a beautiful game on PS5 Pro. Looks more detailed in the 60 fps mode than Assassin’s Creed Shadows do. Maybe a higher internal resolution in combination with a good PSSR2 implementation ? HDR overall looks decent and much better than SDR. The issues I mention below are significant, but not enough to ruin the overall HDR presentation. The biggest issues are: - A constant black level raise of at least 0.05 nits. It’s a significant raise. Its not there in SDR, so it’s probably the gamma mismatch we also saw in Assassin’s Creed Shadows and Mirage. See picture 4. - No separate shadow slider - Detail gets clipped away at peak brightness on lower nits displays due to no or very aggressive roll off near peak. - The lower peak brightness is setup, the closer peak gets to the midtones and lightsources filling out more of the screen, and the more is getting clipped. So gamers with lower nits displays (below 1000 nits) are most affected. - The exposure slider effects the whole range between the black level floor and peak brightness. I don’t like that. It should mostly effect midtones. - lowering the exposure slider flattens shadows against the fixed black level floor (that is raised at 0.05 nits) and raising it clips highlights (it’s very visible when looking at the clouds). Picture 1 is 2000 nits max luminance and picture 2 is 800 nits max luminance. We see how detail in highlights is simply cut away. The clouds in front of the bright sun will look like a big white blob. Picture 3 shows the constant black level raise of 0.05 nits. It’s with the exposure slider all the way to the left (-2). The exposure slider lowers shadows, but can’t touch the raised black level raise. Shadow area is simply flattened against it. Setup recommendations: - HDR is setup using two in-game sliders for Max Luminance and Exposure. See picture 4. - Set the Maximum Luminance slider to your displays max brightness output. The game will output the value you set. - Most should leave the exposure at default exposure. Increasing it will increase upper shadows and crush even more highlight detail. - Gamers with 1000 nits capable displays or less can consider lowering exposure to -0.5. It will reduce highlight clipping a bit. It will also lower upper shadows, that is good, but it will also lower midtones. It’s a compromise. Chromatic aberration: Turn off especially chromatic aberration. It completely ruins detail. Motion blur and Camera effects too, if you want. See picture 4.

@TheGamingAlwin Si lo probe, y creo que pasar de psvr1 a psvr2 es poco, estoy jugando flight simulator 2024 en psvr2 desde su lanzamiento hace unos meses, y ayer y hoy he estado en la beta y simplemente mejoro en un 300%, aun no entiendo como salio asi y no como esta version. Es impresionante.

@opulentcandy @PS4VRNews Bro, I tried it last night in beta, it's ridiculously better, I'm shocked, I'm almost crying. I can't understand how they released the previous version, and I could have released it as it is now fixed. It is at least 100% better, the buildings, the cabin, the clouds, amazing.

@HDRgameAnalysis When I do the HDR setting on the ps5, when the images disappear, with a G5 of 2,000 nits approx., am I calibrating wrong? Should I go beyond the values where the image disappears? Where can I see those articles?

HDR analysis & setup guide — #RedDeadRedemption2 on PC and PS5. HDR is implemented the same way on PC and PS5 (I did not test on Series X). It's a decent HDR implementation with some good parts and a fair few not-so-good ones. I really like the bright, detailed highlights. Noticeably raised black levels and a less saturated look compared to SDR, and a limited paper white range are the main weaknesses. The Good - Bright, detailed small light sources — street lamps, gas lights, candles — with real structure inside them. It's HDR letting us see the artists handcrafted small detail. It's some of the best detail in bright lightsources I have seen. - Peak brightness slider works as expected: what you set is what the game outputs (slider goes up to 10000 nits). - Dark scenes in indoor areas or in cities at night time can look strikingly good at times. See picture 1 with detail in the lamp, outputting 2000 nits in a dark city scene. The Bad - Black levels are noticeably raised. SDR has much darker shadows — this isn't a minor lift, the whole low end sits too high. The heavy use of fog makes this look even worse. Picture 3 is SDR and picture 4 is in-game HDR with 200 on paper white slider. - The raised blacks also reduce perceived saturation. Lifting the dark end washes the colors out, which is part of why the in-game HDR looks less saturated than SDR. - There's no separate shadow slider to bring the blacks down. - Raising paper white makes it worse: it lifts the already-raised blacks further, and with no shadow slider to compensate, the low end washes out more. - Raising paper white also pushes the brighter/secondary light sources toward peak, where they get aggressively compressed and lose a bit of detail. - It means the usable paper white range is limited - go too high and you get even more washed out shadows and crushed highlights at the same time. - The default paper white is set to 100 and thats way to dim. The default setting should be what most gamers would use. Setup recommendations - HDR setup screen in picture 2. - Use Game HDR, not Cinematic. Cinematic is the old mode, and it's the reason a lot of people think RDR2's HDR is more broken than it is. - Set peak brightness to your display's peak. - Set paper white to around 200. This is in my opinion the best setting — not because it's ideal, but because going much higher will give you even more raised blacks and you can lose a bit of detail due to aggressive highlight compression. I'm assuming you are gaming in a dark room. In a brighter room, you can go up to around 300 on the paper white slider. PC only — RenoDX: I recommend PC gamers to use the RenoDX HDR mod. Its default and purist settings matches the intended SDR look more closely, with darker blacks/shadows, better perceived saturation. With RenoDX we can increase paper white further without risking losing detail in the brightest highlights. The default settings raises the secondary bigger lightsources even higher. Purist does not. RenoDX only works in Story Mode. Note on PS5 version: PS5 is only running the PS4 version of the game. That means a quite low resolution, lower quality graphical settings and only 30 fps. The detail in small lightsourches, such as lamps are not so noticable because of this on PS5 compared to PC. So console gamers might not be so impressed by this, as I am, when they have not seen the PC version. Its a shame we have not gotten a next gen upgrade for RDR2 on consoles.

It depends on what picture mode you are using on G5. In game mode G5 outputs up to 2100 nits. In filmmaker mode withe game optimiser, it can output up to 2400 nits. Its according to Rtings. I don't have a G5 myself, so I'm not 100% sure how to setup filmmaker mode to be used properly for gaming.
