Tough news for FAANG engineers: Startups don’t want you anymore Every founder I’ve spoken to is tired of them. Instead, they’re hiring ex-founders— engineers who value ownership and grinding to win

@matsonj You should be able to specify codec via encoding argument and read the csv in chunks. ISO-8559-1 works often

is a there python package anywhere that can strip non-UTF-8 characters from CSV files? I cannot find one. the key bit here is ability to handle larger than memory CSVs which pandas cannot do.

I'm closing in on the end of my current ebook. What's something you've read that has inspired you, motivated you, or really given you a different perspective? I'm open on topics. Just looking for a jolt!

@anothercohen Large remote meetings suck though. In a conference room you get small side interactions with the folks around you. I'd argue that big meetings are more lonely for remote workers

100% remote work combined with a no meeting culture is going to create a large group of lonely, isolated workers

Any of you #psych #iopsych twitter folks have info on using timeouts as a punishment for toddlers? I've seen arguments for and against but not sure where the evidence is stronger

If you want players to keep coming back to your game: 1) Make sure they feel the thrill of discovery. 2) Introduce them to exciting new challenges frequently. 3) Make sure they recognize their own progress. Now they'll stick around.

Enthusiast: ChatGPT is gonna replace search engines like Google! Skeptic: Yeah, but it doesn’t really work. sometimes it is amazing, but it often gives you garbage. Enthusiast: Sure but you can make it work! All you have to do is … hook it up to … a …search engine! 🙄

@tcarpenter216 But you've got to think (well, I do) that 10-20 years from now the tech will be there. In that case it will just be an easier way to use computers that takes up less space, is more portable, and more integrated. What advantage would a laptop offer?

@tcarpenter216 The latest Oculus has full passthrough. You put it on and you see the world around you, then overlay things on that. Or can fully immerse. Clearly headed toward lighter weight wearables + mixed reality. But yeah, same ideas as google glass and tech still isnt quite there

@tcarpenter216 Why does it have to be a headset? If it's something like glasses w overlay image, this eliminates the need for a bunch of monitors. The use case could be as broad as all business and personal computing

@AndrewCollmus The success of different technologies has nothing to do with this one. Putting on a headset and spending 8 hours a day in a virtual world … I don’t see that solving a business problem or providing a good experience for users
