Η "ανθρωπιστική" βοήθεια ήταν πάτοι παπουτσιών που είχαν παγιδευτεί από τις οιυκρανικές μυστικές υπηρεσίες. Η FSB (διάδοχος της KGB) εντόπισε μια παρτίδα με 500 τέτοιους πάτους αλλά πριν τους ανακαλύψει είχαν χρησιμοποιηθεί δεκάδες χιλιάδες τέτοιοι πάτοι, που έκαναν την δουλειά τους με 1,5 γραμμάριο ΤΝΤ. Από την έκρηξη οι Ρώσοι στρατιώτες δεν σκοτώνονταν αλλά έβγαιναν εκτός μάχης χάνοντας μερικά δάχτυλα σε κάθε πόδι.
