Residency is just one of the required eligibility factors to be on SNAP - and the program accepts self-attestation/cerification (honor system). In addition, program rules allow states to use Simplified Reporting - which means if you apply on Monday and move on Tuesday, you can still get the state you applied to feed you in another state until you have to renew… and in some states, that’s a year or two. Fraud/Waste by Design.

NEW DATA: Hundreds of thousands of food stamp enrollees had verifiable addresses in other states — some with no record of *ever* living in the state they claimed benefits in.

Medicare fraud is a serious crime. Taxpayers are being robbed by as much as $100 billion a year by fraudsters and criminal organizations. They’re not just stealing your money—they are taking resources away from a healthcare program that our parents, grandparents & vulnerable neighbors rely on.

SNAP Retailers? Like, little corner stores? (do you know what those are?) "Over 20"? What does that mean, 21? How much could we be talking here, a few thousand dollars? How much did this investigation cost us, how much will the trials cost, what will happen to them in the end? This is bullshit. There's criminals stealing BILLIONS of dollars in front of our eyes and you're prosecuting less than 25 retailers. FFS, you guys are fucking clowns.

Operation “Cold SNAP” was a HUGE SUCCESS!!! ❄️🫰🇺🇸 @OIGUSDA agents, teamed with @HSI_HQ, @USDA_FNS, and the @USAttorneys Office, and powered by @VP Vance’s Fraud Task Force, hit OVER 20 fraudulent SNAP retailers with criminal warrants and administrative charges that could boot them for good. No more stealing from hungry children, needy families, and hardworking taxpayers. Inspector General John Walk and his team are putting fraudsters on notice. Steal from the taxpayer? Pay the price. Report fraud @ fns.usda.gov/fraud. #OperationColdSNAP #EndFraud #OIG #VanceFraudTaskForce usdaoig.oversight.gov/articles/news/…

Food stamp retailer fraud isn't just a Minnesota problem. It's a nationwide problem. 1 in 7 authorized retailers is trafficking benefits. $2 billion stolen from taxpayers every year. And USDA has the tools to stop it. @TheFGA's research explains exactly how. 🧵

“Great meeting in the Twin Cities today with Minnesota State Rep. Kristin Robbins, Fraud Prevention and State Agency Oversight Policy Committee Chair, to discuss USDA OIG’s work to address fraud in federally funded nutrition assistance programs in Minnesota. We look forward to working with Rep. Robbins and other state officials to stop the fraud so that federal assistance goes to eligible Minnesotans who rely on it and not criminals who profit from stealing from American taxpayer funded programs intended for those in need. Thanks for sharing your ideas Rep. Robbins!” - USDA Inspector General John Walk. #USDA #OIG #agriculture #fightingfraud #FraudFriday

It's NOT just Blue States - it's how programs were designed. The War on Fraud is a bipartisan problem, and we "cheapen" the serious impact (and threat to national security) when we point figures instead of addressing the problem. Both red AND blue states need to address this!
The Wall Street Journal@WSJ

From @WSJFreeEx via @WSJOpinion: The fraud in California, Minnesota and other blue states aren’t outliers. They are the predictable result of how blue-state social-welfare systems are designed and run, writes @jamesbmeigs. on.wsj.com/4cpurda

@OIGUSDA in action, cracking down on fraudulent #SNAP retailers in Minnesota!
PaulEckloff@PaulEckloff

❄️ OPERATION COLD SNAP – WALKING THE WALK Plenty of talk about fraud. This is action. Federal agents from @OIGUSDA, @HSI_HQ, @USDA_FNS, and prosecutors executed warrants across the Twin Cities targeting SNAP trafficking retailers. Not estimates. Not theories. Action. “Fraudulent SNAP retailers steal from victims that include children who rely on federal nutrition assistance.” That’s the reality. Food off the table. SNAP fraud is a multi-billion dollar problem. Operations like this are how you push back. 👏 Credit to USDA OIG, USSS, HSI, FNS, and @DOJCrimDiv partners. usdaoig.oversight.gov/articles/news/…

Good report. One clarification - fraud is NOT included in the Payment Error Rates. The QC Handbook 310 defines the Payment Error Rate as the measurement of active case accuracy, meaning whether the household was eligible and whether it received the correct allotment amount. The QC review is framed around eligibility, allotment accuracy, overissuances, underissuances, and ineligibility, not around a separate fraud finding.

🚨 States with food stamp error rates at or above 6% will soon pay a share of the costs! In fact, 42 states are in that boat. The clock is ticking—here's what policymakers must do now. thefga.org/research/foods…

🚨 The food stamp program has a fraud-by-design problem! A Clinton-era loophole called Broad-Based Categorical Eligibility is letting millions of ineligible people collect benefits. Here's how it works—and why Indiana's move to close it should be a model for every state. 🧵

As someone who previously ran Florida DCFs Office Public Benefits Integrity, this is welcomed. Fraud must be stopped BEFORE a provider is authorized - not billing. Otherwise you’re stuck in Pay and Chase. And that’s not just Mediiad provider fraud - it’s every beneficiary or recipient application in every assistance program. These were the findings of the sunsetted Florida Medicaid and Public Assistance Task Force in 2014. @govGoneWild has a competent Public Assistance Fraud unit that has resulted in Florida leading the country in post-issuance fraud stats. Yet, nobody is asking why Florida agencies chose fraud friendly policies in program administration. If th TF looked at WHY and HOW each agency is administering these programs, we would have proper stewardship of taxpayer funds. Until THAT happens, these task force efforts are just rolling a boulder uphill.
