Feeling handy this morning. I successfully managed the (trivial) task of replacing the tail light housing assembly on my van.
YouTube is a miracle for stuff like this. There has never been a better time to say “I wonder if I could do that myself?”

A cashless society, where reputation is the only currency. Everyone wears a mask at all times, changing masks to match their moods/responsibilities. Language requires musical instruments.

The best SF author at representing humans in space was Jack Vance. He portrayed us as quirky and weird and just as bizarre and multi-cultural as we are in life. I remember in one story, there was a carnival on another world, and one tent featured "The Mystic Earthman" because Earth was this incredible legendary world that all humans knew about.

All attempts to design a flag that represents all of humanity end up being garbage because there are no symbols that are both universally recognized by all humans and have any resonance. This is one reason why generic space humans in sci-fi are always boring.

American Pit Bull Terriers and American Staffordshire Terriers look identical because they have identical ancestry. They were all bred from early American pit bulls. They're essentially the same breed named differently by two different American dog registries.

with the technology of just 100 or so years from now we can use giant lasers to accelerate small microsail ships to 0.25 c, drop a mirror, use the same laser to decelerate, arrive in < 50 years, use von neumann machines controlled by AIs to build colonies

We're not going to travel beyond the solar system, according to Leonard Susskind. And neither are aliens, coming to visit us. We may not be alone, but we are stuck here for, essentially forever. 1. The nearest star is 4.24 light years away. The fastest spacecraft ever built would require 6,600 years to get there. 2. Surely we can just build faster spacecraft. The problem is to get to anywhere close to the speed of light, we need exponentially more energy. 3. Chemical rockets will just not work. Even fusion rockets won't work. Even 10% of the speed of light is not achievable. The Tsiolkovsky Rocket Equation prevents it. 4. Interstellar dust becomes hand grenades when traveling anywhere close to the speed of light. Ships break. 5. Space radiation will kill us over the time need to travel interstellar distances. Impossible to protect without massive shields, which require massive energy to accelerate and de-accelerate.
