Weigel's correct here. Some legislators (say, Steny "Silver Fox" Hoyer) remain effective well into senior years. Others don't. It's a spectrum. The Grassley who stood up to W on corporate tax inversions is different from Cranky Grassley now. Johnson was at Strom/Byrd incapacity.
David Weigel@daveweigel

I don’t respect anyone who runs for a new term while unable to serve, regardless of race. They’re rotten, selfish people. Thanks for letting me clarify.

Kash Patel is abusing his power as FBI Director to investigate people who criticize his girlfriend, provide her with SWAT team security, and private flights...and she's still his girlfriend. I doubt he's the one dragging his feet here. Kind of sad when you ignore the corruption.

He's right on the politics and the policy. Functionally, an assault weapons ban today would do very little to curb access to the firearm, given that there are easily 20-30 million in circulation in the U.S. right now. And on the politics, well, the people like guns.
Politics & Poll Tracker 📡@PollTracker2024

NBC News: Graham Platner, notably, leans to the right on one issue: He said he’d oppose a ban on semi-automatic assault weapons, a goal that Democrats have pursued for years. “In a nation awash in guns like ours,” he said, the focus should be on restricting access to firearms people with a violent history or “displaying a likelihood of committing a violent act.” #MaineSenate

Dems had been trying to reason with Scott for years — he was old, fading and unable to do the job like he used to. But he filed to run again and now Dems have their fourth death-caused vacancy of this Congress. politico.com/news/2022/01/1…

@ArjunaFermi “Shapiro struck a deal with Donald Trump to hurt our environment” is the line all 12 debate participants will be using next year. That’s the catch-22 for him. Great for a PA re-election, rough for a progressive primary.

Tbh, I don't think we totally know what Fetterman would be like in a 51-49 Senate. He wasn't a problem for Schumer or Biden in 2023/24 and his breaks in Trump 2 are both overwhelmingly about Israel/immigration and not that wild in historical terms - he voted to confirm the same amount of Trump appointees last year as Tim Kaine in Trump 1, for example

@stevemorris__ Honestly we would need another seat on top of that. A 51-49 D Senate relying on Fetterman may as well be 50-50 for many important votes.

@ArjunaFermi @BlueCheese608 This is correct thinking. The seven 'swing' states should be first, followed by states that were +5 to +10. States that either party wins by 10 points or more should go last. Why can't you do it like an NBA draft? The states that were closest in 2024, they go first in 2028.

@shakoistsLog This doesn’t give enough pricing power to the author. Instead it should be something like the first 1000 unique visitors get the article for free for $500

substack should have a button on paid articles, enabled as an option by authors, that lets a benefactor "buy it for everyone." e.g. a rich benefactor may think it to be worth $500 or some such amount to make an article behind a paywall free for everyone.

@Ed_of_O @mattyglesias I agree we should have price transparency, and the Trump Administration passed a law requiring this. But most hospitals and other doctor’s office refuse to follow it, because they know no Dem or Republican administration will enforce it

@ArjunaFermi @mattyglesias Not any harder to address than big tech. Mark Cuban alone has broken one of the biggest stranglehold on the industry. The next step is enforcing price transparency, which most doctors & patients support Then vertical integration of insurance w/PBMs & 🏥 Not as hard as you think

I continue to find it puzzling that we've looped around to antitrust enforcement as an "affordability" strategy without revisiting the debate over the consumer welfare standard.
Edward-Isaac Dovere@IsaacDovere

NEW from me: Lina Khan's phone has been ringing w/prospective 2028 Dems, as she pushes for an even more aggressive anti-trust stance, adding tools from Trump. @ewarren: “If you’re a leader who wants to deliver on affordability, it’s a smart move to call" cnn.com/2026/04/20/pol…
