Take It or Leave It Pre-Islamic Era - interesting history to read. Just like the West, the Europeans, Mongolians, and Chinese, slavery also existed among the Arabs. This was during the period known as "Jahiliyyah" (the Age of Ignorance) that is before the coming of Islam. At that time, idol worship was widespread, along with practices such as slavery, tribalism, and excessive indulgence in vices. With the coming of Islam through Prophet Muhammad (SAW), a major transformation began. He called people to stop worshipping idols and to worship one God, Allah, and emphasized justice, equality, and human dignity. Islam discouraged and completely abolished slavery, made it Haram, forbidden. and instead encouraged Prophet Muhammad SAW to promote the freeing of slaves as an act of great virtue and expiation. He taught that a Muslim is a brother and a sister to a fellow Muslim. He further taught that everyone is equal in the sight of Allah regardless of race, tribe, or social status. The most honoured and loved by Allah are those who are most pious and righteous. As a result, many early Muslims freed those under their custody. A powerful example is Bilal ibn Rabah (RA), a formerly enslaved man of Ethiopian origin, who was sooo black and was freed and he elevated him and chose him to deliver the first ever call to prayer, the Adhaan, a role of immense honor that continues 5 times a day to date. This would have been reserved for the nobles tribe and not a former slave, but Prophet Muhammad SAW did so to cut out any reservations and that we are all equal. Why we do not see the slaves in Arabia or Along the East African coast, this is due to interactions between Arabs and local native communities over time and being equal through islam led to intermarriages and cultural blending, contributing to the emergence of "Swahili", an Arab and a local native African. They blended and became one. Please note. It is also important to acknowledge that, like in any society, you can never miss the likes of Judas.
