Unpopular opinion: Every generation has faced the temptation to celebrate political violence and murder. Some cheered when Malcolm X was killed, some when Dr. King was assassinated, and others when Black Panther leaders were taken out. History shows us those celebrations aged poorly, they exposed people’s values more than they changed the world. The killing of Charlie Kirk will test people the same way. It’s natural to feel strong emotions when some someone you dislike gets killed, but it is never righteous to glorify murder. Violence doesn’t liberate us; it only corrupts us. Pay close attention to how your friends and allies respond. When people shed their values to cheer on pain and death, they expose their own hypocrisy and remind you that maybe they were never allies at all. Simply put, I can disagree with people and not want to see them dead, even if they felt differently about me. What other people eat doesn’t make me shit.
