A Comeback 30 Years in the Making: The Red-Crowned Roofed Turtle Returns to the Ganga! Once believed lost to the Ganga forever, the majestic and endangered Red-Crowned Roofed Turtle (Batagur kachuga) has made a triumphant return—after three decades. Thanks to the collective efforts of Namami Gange, the Turtle Survival Alliance–India (TSA–India), the Forest Department of Uttar Pradesh, and the National Chambal Sanctuary, what was once a river gasping for life is now writing a new story of hope and revival. On April 26, 2025, 20 turtles were released into the Haiderpur Wetland Complex, a vibrant and ecologically rich area that reconnects with the Ganga during the monsoon, allowing the turtles to gradually disperse into their natural habitat. This reintroduction — the first of its kind — follows extensive field studies, biodiversity assessments, and habitat evaluations conducted since 2020. Each turtle was fitted with sonic transmitters to ensure continuous monitoring and learnings on rewilding strategies, split between upstream and downstream release sites to compare adaptability outcomes. This milestone is not just about a species' return — it’s a powerful reminder of what’s possible when science, policy, and partnerships come together. It reflects our broader mission: to not only clean the Ganga but revive its biodiversity, restore its ecological balance, and rekindle its legacy as a cradle of life. From no sightings in 30 years to 20 turtles reintroduced with cutting-edge tracking devices, this is not just a conservation milestone—it’s a resurrection. This is biodiversity restoration in action. This is what happens when science, policy, and partnerships come together for a river that defines a civilization. Namami Gange isn’t just cleaning a river—it’s healing an entire ecosystem. Let’s celebrate this rare return. Let’s protect it. Let’s flow forward. #NamamiGange #RedCrownedRoofedTurtle #HaiderpurWetland #RiverRestoration #TurtleSurvivalAlliance #UPForestDept #NationalChambalSanctuary #TurtleReintroduction #CleanGanga #BiodiversityRevival #JalSeJeevan #IndiaForRivers

A bevy of Smooth coated Otters gather at the edge of Jhaddi lake to scent mark their territory with urine and rubbing against the soil. The younger one observe & imitate the elders. They are social & communicate with various chirps, whistles & squeaks. @DudhwaTR @rameshpandeyifs
