He disrupted a women's health event by setting off the fire alarm but the police let him off because he said it was a 'protest'. This is Brighton where if you are trans you really CAN do 'whatever you like, all the time'. #Brighton

Great thread by @nmdacosta. Watching bad lawmaking in real time sends shivers down my spine. I used to wonder how other bad laws such as the GRA2004 ever made it through. Now it’s clear. These MPs don’t care about good law. They just want any law.

What have we learned after two days of Assisted Dying Committee evidence? 1. Lack of access to palliative care is a major barrier to assisted dying being a genuine choice.

Framing the issue of assisted dying as compassion and humanity v cruelty/lack of humanity is wrong. We need a respectful debate that acknowledges the serious safeguarding risks as well as the acknowledged benefits of legislative reform in this area.
Kit Malthouse MP@kitmalthouse

I will stand four square with Kim, as will millions of people who are on the side of compassion and humanity. The law must change in the name of love.

As I wrote for the Observer a couple of weeks ago, this makes me very uncomfortable. The PM saying he's pleased to be making good on a personal promise to a high-profile campaigner is not in the spirit of a free vote. He wants it to happen, and a lot of new MPs know that.

Why should Esther Rantzen have more of a voice than any other member of the public? Since when did we need to follow the will of highly paid members of the establishment media class?

The reason the assisted dying bill will unfortunately pass: on one side there are emotive personal stories, mainlining straight into the #bekind brain; and on the other there are cold hypotheticals about possible victims, very likely to come true but with no clout at the moment

@FondOfBeetles The fire service is aiming to recruit more female fire-fighters (I’m one of them). The physical fitness tests are the same for all. Most men can pass but only the fittest women get through. Sex differences are obvious but can be useful when deployed correctly. I fit small gaps.

On female security guards and sex differences. I was once asked, in deposition, whether my “discriminatory framework” for sports categories - men are, on average, bigger, stronger, faster and therefore, women need a protected category - extended to discrimination in employment. That is, should employers be able to discriminate by sex in physical jobs? It’s an interesting question. If I turn up to a job as a bricklayer, where the goal is to build as quickly as possible, and I’m sized up - literally - against 6 ft men with rippling shoulders and biceps, I ain’t getting the job. If the job is to move pallets of bricks using a forklift, there is no reason I shouldn’t be considered equally capable as any male. In fact, one might argue that this is a good division of sexed labour? (Shhh) Husbandman and I have oft considered how we might be drafted in some kind of global warfare. Ignoring that we’d both be better developing biological weapons, I am not being sent to the front line. I can read maps and plan and comms and maybe even be a bit sniper, but at no point am I the type of person who can wrestle an unexpected attacker to the floor. A security detail needs to be able to decisively rugby tackle the target to the floor in one move. That ain’t me. That’s the aforementioned 6ft dude with rippling shoulders and biceps. That doesn’t mean women don’t have a role, it is simply a pragmatic assignment of roles, that has to account for the potential decisive physicality that might be required. @SwipeWright said something interesting about this. If the goal is to build as quickly as possible (output based), I’m not the bricklayer for you. If the goal is to lift a particular number of bricks in a particular amount of time, anyone who reaches that threshold should be considered, regardless of sex. That might include me, who knows. For discussion, in good faith.

This is an unbearable watch. Condescending, uninformed and misogynistic. He doesn’t get it and clearly never will. There’s a fundamental conflict of rights and we need brave leaders to tackle it not shirk it.
