Joint statement from myself, King County Executive Shannon Braddock, Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell, Pierce County Executive Ryan Mello and Tacoma Mayor Victoria Woodards: We condemn President Trump’s illegal activation of California National Guard forces over the objections of California’s governor. We understand the strong feelings that President Trump’s actions are generating in our state. The right to protest is core to our nation. It is critical that Washingtonians do so peacefully. Violence will not be tolerated. Those who break the law can expect to be held accountable. At the same time, we expect that local law enforcement will manage all protests with professionalism, and without interference from the federal government.

Washington, California, and Oregon depend on the best science and knowledge available to protect public health, including scientific information about immunizations. We have grave concerns about the integrity and transparency of upcoming federal vaccine recommendations and will continue to collaborate to ensure that science and sound medicine prevail to prevent any loss of life.

Not surprisingly, a Federal court ruled today that Trump illegally federalized the National Guard in California without the approval of the Governor. Once again, our court system is keeping Trump's authoritarian overreach in check. Washington will be prepared if Trump attempts a similar unconstitutional stunt in Washington state.

I ask the people of Washington state to join us in protecting our state by ensuring that demonstrations over the weekend are peaceful. In times like this, it's not just a right that people have to express their opinions about their government. In my opinion, it's a duty. It's that important. President Trump's activation of the California National Guard, over the objection of their governor, is deeply disturbing. We've joined their lawsuit challenging the president's actions. Washington will be prepared if Donald Trump attempts a similar stunt in Washington state. We must speak out peacefully and lawfully. Donald Trump wants to be able to say that we cannot handle our own public safety in Washington state. Don't give him an excuse to try and federalize the National Guard like he did in California.

Speaking out against a chaotic administration that repeatedly violates the law is critical to our democracy, but we must do that peacefully and lawfully. Let's work together as a state, as a people, to not give Donald Trump what he wants.
