@SarahBlick3 @WeirdMedieval Ah, yes. I saw in a documentary that you had to get the eye of a nightmare beast to make minute details and color them nicely. The Secret of Kells, was called.

@AxiaDjinn @WeirdMedieval Almost everything was colorful in the Middle Ages--they adored color. Manuscripts were illuminated with vivid hues that were often quite costly.

@AlexCaswen @KatDoes3D This is not sarcasm, by the way. I really admire how you con deeded that the way you stated something was not the correct way of making the point you were trying to make.

@AlexCaswen @KatDoes3D You took that crow, plucked it, seasoned it, baked it with some rosemary, and then proceeded to eat it with the greatest degree of dignity. Truly an example. More people should be like this.

Here's why your optic's reticle needs to have depth, and not just have the reticle stuck to the glass. Both of these animations are the exact same. The only difference is how far out the reticle is being rendered. #b3d

@Jonathan_Blow Well, motion is notoriously not an area where language skills are required. Different tools for different tasks, no? Kinda the same reason why you don't use a shovel to screw a bolt.

Theory: We don't let LLMs control robots and operate freely in the physical world (yet?) because they'd fall all the time, break everything, and cause massive damage. But in software the falling and the massive damage are invisible, so it's fine. x.com/sama/status/20…

I have so much gratitude to people who wrote extremely complex software character-by-character. It already feels difficult to remember how much effort it really took. Thank you for getting us to this point.

@synaesthesiajp It’s not “correct” it’s just guessing how it should look based on a bunch of training data and overlaying it. It’s discarding the render entirely and replacing it with an AI generated image every frame. Absolutely unimpressive to an incredible degree.

Great article on what DLSS 5 is actually doing. I know everyone is looking at faces, but look at the leather jacket. Look at the correct lighting on the neck. Look at the light diffusion in the hair (which is VERY hard to do right with strand hair techniques). This is awesome.

@QuiteShallow It's AN aesthetic. Some works will make better use of it than others. RDR2, for example, is great from a game, art direction, and aesthetics point. All while being on the more realistic side.

What's with these scum's obsession with realism anyway? The best-looking games universally have been the ones with standout art styles. In fact, this texture of Unreal Engine 5 "photorealism" slop-aesthetic just makes everything look the same and makes me angry.

@Sixberryrisen @TheMG3D I don't know, man. Going from the early Will Smith eating spaghetti videos to the modern... ehm... Will Smith eating spaghetti videos, shows that a lot of progress has been made in a relatively short amount of time. It is a bit hard to predict when they will stop improving.

so far had close to ZERO conversations with folks that are anti AI. The convo usually starts with someone attacking, I reply explaining my point of view, then either no responce, or more attacks, or I get blocked (hi Kenney : )

@shinosarna @andreintg The usual argument is that, legally speaking and depending on the jurisdiction, it is not stealing. On the moral side of things, I guess not everyone is as absolutist on the moral implications of model training.

@Critical_Scribe Unreal 5???!!! That horrible, unoptimized monstrosity that kneecaps the creativity of developers and can only produce slop games???!!! It's just a tool, man. It depends on who uses it. Same with this thing.

What utter cope. “It’s optional, so it’s up to the devs to utilize.” You mean the same AAA devs that have been using the “optional” DLSS4 to try and excuse away poor optimization? The same AAA devs that keep trying to lean on Ray Tracing, which is “Optional” to brute force their lighting! The same AAA devs that “optionally” use Unreal Engine 5 because it’s convenient but has shown poor optimization across the board? Those devs? Those guys? They’re probably chomping at the bit right now to use this to make their work “easier”.
Gaz@Septic_Sauce

Everyone is knee-jerk reacting to the Resident Evil Requiem comparison shots of Grace when screaming "AI SLOP" but how is this not impressive?? DLSS5 will be up to the devs/artists to utilise. How they choose to do so is up to them.

@Big__TeeJ Those are toggles devs put into games themselves and aware of the effects they’ll have. DLSS5 is an overly aggressive upscaler made by an outside entity changing the look of their game in ways that were never intended. That’s extremely different. Nice try though.

To all of those complaining about how DLSS5 is destroying the "artist intended vision" Let me ask you this... Are you turning off motion blur and chromatic aberration? Because if you are, you're doing the exact same thing! At least this tool is still 100% within the developer's control and they decide how and where it is implemented in their game. It is nothing more than another tool in their toolbox. And just like that motion blur that you turn off no matter what, regardless of giving it a chance as the artist intended... You can simply turn this off as well! So again I asked why are people going to complain about something like this and yet they go about destroying the artist's intended vision themselves everyday?

🚨 Everyone is hating on Nvidia's DLSS 5. I think they're all wrong. > DLSS 1 got destroyed.. It became the standard. > RTX got clowned.. It became the standard. > Ray tracing got mocked.. It became the standard. Every time Nvidia ships something new, gamers riot. Every time, two years later, they can't live without it.. 8,000 people liked a reply saying "this looks horrifically bad." The same people will pre-order the GPU that runs it.. Nvidia didn't become a $3 trillion company by listening to reply guys... They became one by being right before everyone else was ready. Hate it now. Beg for it later. That's the Nvidia cycle.

@SynthPotato just in case anyone didn't know it's the devs themselves doing this, not Nvidia. it's just an sdk tool set for developers to use so whether you like or hate the end result, it is a product of the game devs.

NVIDIA just announced DLSS 5, which seems to generate AI images on top of upscaling, rather than just upscale what is already there as per all previous DLSS versions and this looks... not good. It is heavily leaning into AI slop, Grace looks like a completely different person.
