Is there a good way to understand how much money was worth at different periods of time compared to today?
1850-1920 in America is my fav era to read about.

@nntaleb Well said. So-called forward guidance doesn't work. There are ample examples, such as during QE3 in 2013 when interest rate fell way lower after, than, during forward guidance.
It is unbelievable how Fed-centric, how statist the worldview of the author of the Network State is.

The Federal Reserve is NOT in the business of providing guidance to investors. Its business is monetary and financial stability.
Technologists (particularly cryptoheads) are proving way too ignorant about basic finance.

There was indeed a broken promise. And we can prove it. Every quarter, the Fed publishes rate forecasts. What did they forecast back in Dec 2020? Well, their median estimate for 2023's rate was 0.1%. But today, it's actually 4.75%. Off by >47X!! So any bank who bought long-term bonds on that Dec 2020 guidance got destroyed. federalreserve.gov/monetarypolicy…

Most of us who went into finance in the 80s knew in great detail what happened in the 60s, 40s, 20s & even the 19th century. Some of us studied EVERY recorded past crisis.
We are seeing VCs & hotshots like my two recent preys who don't even know what really happened in 2007.
