Kudos to a16zcrypto for fund 5! Early this year A16Z shared their culture doc written by @bhorowitz which has been in place at A16Z forever. As I read this doc, I was extremely surprised to see paragraph after paragraph in lived experience with A16Z Crypto. Many of us founders write culture docs but it’s extraordinarily difficult to breathe life into. This one was alive. It’s a great case study for all companies. Some highlights: The long view of relationships Before I got my first check from A16Z I had pitched to them unsuccessfully 3 times: a previous startup I did, pitched for Seed and Series A for Eigen. But every single interaction with them was useful and insightful, particularly @alive_eth and @guywuolletjr who I pitched. They were extremely thoughtful and offered highly constructive feedback on what would be needed for them to build conviction on our project. First class business in a first class way Not only that, even after they passed on investing, they offered plenty of help. I always felt they wanted the industry to win. I gave the opening talk in @Tim_Roughgarden research series for the summer on Eigenlayer. Naturally when @alive_eth offered us a term sheet for Series B, the entire team showed up and I was thrilled and took it over higher valuation offers. There in good times and bad. We have been through plenty of good times and really hard times. The team is there with us no matter what. This is honestly one of the main reasons we weather though insanely difficult times! Venture is a team sport With A16Z crypto I never felt we got one partner alone. I always had the entire team on our side - Chris Dixon, Ali Yahya, Eddy Lazzarin, Jason Rosenthal - the whole team always trying to help teams win. It has been an immense pleasure to work with A16Z Crypto. If you are building anything onchain, I unequivocally recommend them!
