A comparison of winds today from the east due to the UAC and next week from the west. Enjoy this cool weather for the next 2–3 days. The pattern changes next week as the monsoon winds (Bay of Bengal branch) have started blowing towards the Andaman Sea. Pondy, Cuddalore, Villupuram coasts and Delta belts have received good rains today. For KTCC, it remains a close hit-or-miss for rains. Maybe Chengalpattu district coasts are more favourable to receive some rains. However, Chennai rain chances at some places are possible till Monday as the UAC dies down close to Chennai-Nellore coast around Monday. Tomorrow too, Pondy, Cuddalore, Villupuram coasts and Delta regions have chances of rains from the UAC, after which the UAC is expected to fade away close to the Chennai coast. So till Sunday, and if lucky even on Monday, we will have pleasant weather thanks to the UAC staying nearby. Once the UAC fades near the Chennai coast, the westerly winds will return. Meanwhile, other parts of Tamil Nadu are expected to get good rains, and Kerala, Karnataka and Bengaluru all have very good chances of rains in the coming days and next week.

Rare heavy rains to occur in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah on 18/19th December =========================== Dubai’s annual average rainfall is only ~100 mm, but in recent years, climate variability has resulted in intense rainfall events where a full year’s rain falls in just 2–3 days. Notably, such extreme events have occurred during the following periods: January 2020 December 2021 July 2022 January 2023 April 2024 – nearly 3× the annual rainfall in 2024 December 2025 (likely to join the list based on the 18/19 Dec event) Reason for rains ----------- A strong upper level westerly trough has already dumped widespread heavy rains over Saudi Arabia. As this system shifts eastward, the trough axis is expected to align perfectly along the northern edge of the UAE, directly impacting Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah. The trough’s orientation and curvature strongly favor organized clouding and heavy rainfall over these regions. Key Dates ----------- Late evening of 18 December: Rain likely to begin over Dubai and nearby cities. 19 December: Widespread rain continues, gradually easing later in the day. Northern UAE (Ras Al Khaimah & adjoining areas): Rain may extend into 20 December Qatar (Doha) and Manama will also get heavy rains on 18/19th from the trough. Iran will bear the brunt of this system, with much heavier rainfall expected and a high risk of flash floods, especially in vulnerable terrain. Tamil Nadu - Kulu Kulu days to be back --------- “Kulu Kulu” weather returns across Tamil Nadu from tomorrow and 20th is the day to watchout for Chennai (KTCC) for coldest night and other areas. Will be interesting to track the cold temperatures recorded. For the first time since 2018, Tamil Nadu is likely to miss the North East Monsoon (NEM ) quota and end below normal by 10–15 mm (6 year above rainfall streak has come to end) while Chennai is expected to fall short by 130 mm, making this the lowest NEM rainfall since 2019 (5 year above rainfall streak has come to end). MJO illana namma monsoon illa is proved once again. A detailed post with stats will be posted later. Thanks to the South west monsoon and awesome October rains, all our lakes in the state are filled to the brim.

My 83 year old paati came by Vande Bharath and got down at platform 5 in Tambaram station (TBM), & has to climb up and down because there are no lifts nor escalator (not that she can use it anyway). Amrit Bharat Station Scheme is a scam, no point of cosmetic upgrades!

Did any one gets TTD tickets...? Within 2 minutes everything getting booked definitely feels fishy, especially if you’ve been trying for 3 months and even senior tickets (for my Uncle) / ₹300 tickets aren’t available. @ncbn @TTDevasthanams

Long post alert! Not that I wouldn’t answer this myself. I thought Grok might give an unbiased and a shorter take. Some who still shout that women aren’t nerds/ run away from taking risk might see this as whining and painfully long. I would say the question is **flawed**, because it frames “weather blogging not taken up by female" with zero grasp of the **systemic push-out** from any field needing grit, fieldwork, 24/7 focus. Thanks for the question though, some space to split out certain things.. Girls ace calculus, then vanish from meteorology, civil, hazard modelling, any core STEM track with 3 a.m. cyclone alerts, flood-site wading, radar vans in rain. Not disinterest; **structure**. We’re funneled into “safe” lanes: CS, biotech, medicine...indoor, clockwork, approved. Civil? “Too dusty.” Meteorology? “Out in storms.” Disaster management? “Not for girls.” I live it daily: pack lunch, check homework, then write the weather post mostly sacrificing sleep. This field demands **relentless commitment**: real-time data, midnight alerts, site visits. Family duties? Default to women. After marriage, career slips to second place: relocate for husband’s job, handle childcare solo, meet in-law expectations, drop everything for family needs. And you still have the grit to pursue, then the toll: guilt over missed duties, broken sleep, dread when a forecast misses and comments explode. One error and keyboard warriors (mostly male) unleash abuse, threats, memes. WeatherMEN get trolled too, but we’re raised to stay silent, unseen, “good.”A single abuse lingers days. Thick skin takes years. And question still exists, especially when you are highly qualified and have a high profile, like a great job (which comes with the hard earned experience), why still put things online? Why place yourself in high risk of answering people?! For Popularity? Fame? Yet we persist. This might feel heavy, even whiny. But the question deserves this truth. I happily track weather despite comments like “ivanga Ramanan akka ponnu, sona nadathuduma?” PhD, 15 years in the field—still need a man’s name for credibility? Wow. Change **is** coming. Speed it: stop asking why women aren’t here. Ask why your sister heard civil is “unpractical,” or having to focus less on career after marriage, why fieldwork requests get mocked, why maternity returnees fade. **Dismantle the rules**, not the women. Every post I share, every line I draw between home, work and forecasts, reminds me that the system is shifting, one dataset at a time. And just to be clear, this isn’t a rant meant to belittle you. I genuinely appreciate that you had the courage to raise this question in an open forum. I’m here today because of a few humble male well-wishers who believed it was time to change the scene, and I hope you’ll do the same.

Some of the suburbs that fall under Chengalpet / Kanchipuram / Tiruvallur district suffer from this neither here nor there syndrome. There are kids whose schools are in Kanchipuram / Chengalpet / Tiruvallur but live in Chennai. In some cases they come to schools in Chennai. It may be a good idea for the all the collectors to come together and create a Greater Chennai Zone based on contiguous taluks so that at least these could have a uniform leave system. @CMOTamilnadu @Anbil_Mahesh @DISTRICTCPT @KanchiCollector @TiruvallurCollr @Collr_Chn
rajasakthimaridasan@Rajasakthim

From yesterday night till now, it’s been raining non-stop in Kundrathur. Still, schools are functioning — why? @KanchiCollector, please think about the suburban areas near Chennai that fall under Kanchipuram district. When Chennai and Thiruvallur collectors declare holidays for schools due to heavy rain, why is Kanchipuram not doing the same — at least for the taluks close to Chennai? Kids are struggling in the rain to reach school, getting fully drenched. This can easily lead to health issues like fever and influenza. Rain doesn’t know district boundaries — it spreads across kilometers, and so does the risk. Please consider their safety. @CMOTamilnadu @Udhaystalin @thamoanbarasan @ChennaiRains @praddy06 @Deltarains @PttvNewsX @polimernews @sunnewstamil

Either the method of declaring holidays based on district should be stopped or Tambaram corporation, Chengalpattu Collectorate should think about places like Chrompet and declare holidays for school. @chennaicorp @Tambaram_Corp

Isolated High intensity short spell storms are happening right from morning here and there in KTCC (Chennai) and other parts of Tamil Nadu. This pattern will continue tomorrow too. Once the cyclone forms, it will start to wrap up the clouds.

The storms from the NW of Chennai moved along the western suburbs to reach southern parts of Chennai and southern suburbs bringing intense spell of rains to places south of Airport. These storms may now push into parts of OMR and then ECR as it contineus to move NNW to SSE. It also triggered isolated thunder cells within the city. Now it is time to keep a tab on the storms to the NE of Chennai to see if they bring rains later in the night from the sea.

Back in 2017 we gave our first seasonal outlook for Northeast Monsoon. What started as an experiment became an annual affair. The outlooks also evolved over time. For the first time possibly a district wise seasonal rainfall estimate from the weather blogging community has been attempted as part of the #NEM2025 seasonal outlook. A year that is likely to be good with potential to become exceptional. For a detailed read visit chennairains.com/northeast-mons… The synopsis is given here.
