Story time — HS players, read this: I retired from pro baseball after my 8th season. Thought the game was behind me. I then coached college baseball for two years… ...then I went to work in the Pennsylvania oilfields for a Coil tubing crew. I was a greenhat. A worm. Bottom of the ocean on the crew. But in 8 months I earned: • Lead operator • CDL • Crane license • Well control school I was building a real career. Then I heard there was an MLB Scouting Bureau open tryout coming up in Lehigh Valley, PA. That’s when I started throwing rocks into the woods on a well pad in Ohio to get my arm in shape to throw... ...Four weeks later, my supervisor let me take the company truck on a six-hour drive. No guarantees. Just a opportunity. I touched 97 mph 4 times in my 20 pitch bullpen. Two weeks later, I signed with the Pirates. Just like that I was back in pro baseball living out my lifelong dream. Here’s the lesson for HS players: Opportunities don’t prepare you. You prepare for opportunities. When your name gets called will you be ready?
