Today in American History: 1865 The assassination of Abraham Lincoln. Actor and crazed Confederate sympathizer John Wilkes Booth cowardly shot President Abraham Lincoln in the head while Lincoln attended a performance of the play Our American Cousin at Ford’s Theatre in Washington, D.C. Lincoln was carried across the street to a boarding house (Petersen House), where he died early the next morning on April 15. The attack was part of a larger conspiracy that also targeted Secretary of State William H. Seward (who survived an assault that same night). This occurred just days after the Confederate surrender at Appomattox, ending the Civil War.
