JUST IN: State Senator Simcha Felder has been elected NYC Councilman for the 44th District, defeating Heshy Tishler and filling the vacant seat previously held by Kalman Yeger, who became a New York State Assemblyman earlier this year. The 44th District covers parts of Boro Park, Midwood, and Flatbush. Felder’s term will run through the end of the year, after which he must run in the June primaries and win the general election to secure a full four-year term. A special election is also expected to be scheduled for his now-vacant Senate seat.

On Monday afternoon, @BPShomrim and Boro Park @hatzalah responded to a call regarding an elderly Jewish man who had been pepper sprayed while exiting a sukkah on 50th Street near New Utrecht Avenue. The man had just stepped out of the sukkah to head to his car when a Middle Eastern man approached and pepper-sprayed him. The victim’s eyes became severely swollen, and he was quickly transported to a nearby hospital by Boro Park Hatzolah. Boro Park Shomrim reviewed surveillance footage, which allowed them to identify the make and model of the perpetrator's car, as well as capture an image of the suspect. An hour later a Shomrim volunteer spotted the vehicle at 17th Avenue and 60th Street, where they staked it out for about 45 minutes before notifying the @NYPD66Pct. When the suspect returned to his car, he admitted to the assault and was arrested. The arrest came in just under two hours from when the incident occurred.
