Folic acid is added to flour and, therefore, lots of baked goods like bread and cereals, to help prevent neural tube defects in new-born babies. A public health intervention we can all get behind, you might think. But how do we know that the harms from over-supplementation with folic acid don't outweigh the benefits? We don't. Folic acid is the synthetic form of folate, or vitamin B9. Our bodies do need folate (the natural form is found in leafy greens, citrus fruits and liver), but we need just the right amount. Not too much and not too little. It's hard to get too much from food intake but entirely possible with too much food containing folic acid supplementation. And, for some people, who have a genetic variation which means they struggle to metabolise folic acid, too much can be positively harmful, causing peripheral neuropathy. Perhaps we need to target folic acid supplementation a bit more carefully at where the risk actually is. I am not, and never will be, a pregnant woman, and will never have a baby at risk of neural tube defects so I would like to be able to choose flour that doesn't contain folic acid. petition.parliament.uk/signatures/173…

C’mon people, let’s do this. Not just for the two loved dogs but for their mum who very sadly has to go to hospice with a terminal diagnosis. Nobody deserves that double whammy. Please!
