My favorite part of cattle history comes from Florida: Jacob Summerlin who sold cattle for gold during the civil war to both sides and internationally. While the South’s confederate fiat inflated, he was dealing in gold with Cubans and was responsible for bringing a lot of it into Floridas economy.

@BeefMaps I heard a few times, " Florida at one time had more cattle than Texas" I looked it up and can't find any info supporting that.

Before 1949, Florida was open range. You could run cattle on anybody's land for free. Dan Ryals' grandfather looked at that and said: we need to start buying land. His brother thought it was the dumbest idea he'd ever heard. "Every dime they got up, they bought land." That decision built Ryals Cattle Company — running cattle across eight Florida counties, now consolidated onto what they own. Today they're shipping calves to Texas and Kansas. Raising their own replacements. Moving toward a closed herd. When buyers call Dan to cut a private deal, he tells them to get a bidding number. "I'll deal with Superior." One ranching family chose land ownership and public price discovery over convenience and back-room deals. 🇺🇸

Team meeting today with the head of pest control.  This is a Giant Prairie Robber Fly or Assassin Fly (we like that name better). While they may look intimidating, they're one of the beneficial insects we hope to see in the pastures. These incredible predators feed on horse flies, stable flies, mosquitoes, grasshoppers, leafhoppers, beetles, wasps, bees, and many other flying insects. They're especially helpful because they catch biting flies that bother cattle (sometimes right out of the air). In our regenerative grazing system, we don't try to make every pasture look like a golf course. We intentionally leave behind standing grass and plant residue after cattle move. That leftover cover provides habitat and hunting perches for beneficial insects like robber flies, along with countless other species that are part of a healthy grassland ecosystem. My Mexican neighbor was telling me the other day how he sold the last of his cows in Mexico because his entire life the way it worked was in the spring buyers would come buy whatever calves/cows you wanted to sell, the next day the cartels would show up and demand a %. Within the last 5 years the cartels have kicked out those buyers and come in, buy all of the cows and you hope to get paid for half of them

A friend lost much of his summer grazing after lightning started a grass fire, and now he's scrambling to find more pasture for his cattle for the summer. Another friend jokingly says this year's motto is, "Taking our licks in '26." We laugh...but some days it feels pretty accurate. We're not trying to make any grand statement about why hard things happen. We don't know the reason behind every struggle. But we do know this: difficult seasons have a way of shaping people. They build perseverance, deepen faith, and remind us where our strength really comes from. Maybe this season isn't the end of the story. Maybe it's part of the building. #beef #ranching

NCBA calls ranchers "activists" for wanting consumers to know where their beef comes from. Here is who NCBA actually works for: In 1996, NCBA acquired the Federation of State Beef Councils, giving them control of 10 of 20 seats on the Beef Promotion Operating Committee. The same board that awards NCBA its own contracts. In FY2024, NCBA captured $25.4 million of the $37.1 million in checkoff funds. 68% of every mandatory dollar ranchers are forced to pay. NCBA sued to block MCOOL in 2013. Helped repeal it in 2015. Their 2025 Policy Book still opposes MCOOL and any audit that would expose their fund control. The organization that controls your ranchers' checkoff dollars spent those dollars lobbying to remove the label that would have identified your beef as American. 665,000+ beef cattle operations gone since the Checkoff began. Ranchers keep less than 35 cents of every beef dollar. Down from 60 cents in 1980. NCBA does not speak for ranchers. They speak for the packers who benefit from rancher labor being invisible. @BeefUSA

Today, I've spent more time working on a truck than I have with cattle. That's pretty normal. A typical day might include:
🔧 Working on equipment.
🔨 Fixing fence.
💧 Checking water.
🌱 Planning grazing moves.
📦 Shipping orders.
📱 Answering customer messages.
🐂 And, of course, checking on the cattle. The animals are only one piece of the puzzle. Behind every steak or package of chicken is a whole lot of work that most people never see. @caseymurph1 The grocery store + packer relationship will never change. It’s up to us to educate consumers to buy direct from family ranches and help those ranches get discovered.

The production cost for a Mexican beef rancher is about 7% of what the same pound of beef costs an American rancher, and that Mexican rancher's beef is right next to mine on the retail shelf.
