I don’t know what the solution is, but I do know it’s not right to see someone lose their home bc of skyrocketing property tax rates after spending 30 years paying it off. Especially people on fixed incomes, like a lot seniors are.

@lordvictor No eliminate them on primary residences. That is a simple fix that leaves plenty of meat on the bone. I'm 40, my taxes have gone up over $400 a month in the past 5 years. For what? Nothing changed. It is criminal i pay more in tax than i do on my mortgage.

Property tax rates should be 2x your age x the local rate. So for example if you're 20 you're only paying 40% of the normal amount, but if you're 70 you're paying 140% of the expected amount. In this scheme, if property taxes are baseline 5% then a 20 year old would only pay 2% but a 70 year old would pay 7%

@dehlers2 No we do not want to reach our hands into anything, I am 40, I saw my pension get taken away by the union for a dinner and their 2% cost of living increase on their pension. I see benefits I pay into that I will never see. I see taxes skyrocket due to 55+ communities.

My 95 year old grandmother pays $2000 in property taxes & another $3000 in school taxes every single year on a house that was built in 1850 that is falling apart. She was widowed in 1973 & as a single mother of 6 worked everyday of her life until she was in her mid 70s. She gets $10,000 a year from the federal government to live on, but once you subtract $5000 in taxes she is left with $5000 for the rest of the year to buy food, supplies & bills. Are people really this uneducated on this issue? Oh my god.

I agree. In fact, nobody who has paid off their mortgage should pay property taxes. If you own it, you shouldn’t be paying taxes on it over and over again.

Bullshit. Nobody should be paying property taxes. Our seniors, our kids’ future seniors, the seniors we haven’t even met yet, none of them should need a permission slip from the gov't to stay in a home they already bought.

Everything you listed is a blown out budget to sustain a bureaucracy. I live in NJ, the capital of waste fraud and abuse.

Gonna keep banging home this point: If you work a 9-5, you’ve got a spouse, you’ve got kids, etc. Building the gym into your AM (pre work) schedule may be the ONLY WAY to raise your adherence to where it needs to be to drive meaningful/sustainable results Better to just accept this and act accordingly than it is to fight it for years and years to the tune of little-no progress

White people had whites only schools, restaurants, neighborhoods, water fountains, hospitals, country clubs, colleges, beaches, and entire systems built to exclude Black people for generations…backed by laws, violence, and discrimination. Black people creating safe spaces for ourselves after centuries of being excluded is not the same thing as segregation. One was about oppression and denying people humanity. The other is about community, culture, and being around people who share similar experiences. Y’all can’t spend hundreds of years excluding Black people from everything, then suddenly act confused or offended when Black people create spaces for themselves. Those are not equal comparisons at all.

@RachLANY @justmesaved @NancyMace You must live in a city urban area don't you? There are PLENTY of places that handle these things with less than $100 a month in property taxes. You pay for snow removal, you pay for garbage pickup. I don't need the state to take care of me for $13k a year.

Millennials are so lazy and just need to work harder and not spend money. If they just ate two slices of bread every day, walked 30 miles to work, stop paying for cellphone service, wore the same clothes for 20 years, they would be able to afford a mortgage, buy a car, have kids.

@rpondiscio NJ teachers in many districts make 100k, broken down by hour, nearly the same as a lawyer. Fix education, start educating. Stop making it about test scores and real estate. Money isn't the problem it's methodology. Real, logic / objective education graded on merit.

I’m in favor of raising teacher pay. But I’m unclear how this will “fix” education: is it that teachers are not working hard but will for a raise? Or that higher salaries will lure capable people from law, medicine, tech, etc.?
