@edgefills (note: point #1 relies on excluding the elderly, disabled, and children who are part of SNAP-recipient households.)

@edgefills I think the argument is two-fold. At a high-level: 1.) Most SNAP recipients do, in fact, work and may have little down time between shifts 2.) Social welfare programs don't need to be so intensely paternalistic. I/o/w: people know best what they need; help them get it.

What are people on SNAP even doing that requires prepared food? The entire reason white collar takeout culture exists, or poorer countries have great food on cheap ingredients, is that earning money takes up time that you’d otherwise use to cook. Surprise, grandma’s pasta sauce tastes great cause she’s got nothing to do all Sunday. If these people aren’t earning money, why do they need to get to their couch 2 hours quicker?
Upstate Federalist@upstatefederlst

It is almost impossible to write a law that includes "prepared food" like rotisserie chicken while banning things like McDonald's. That's why there is just a blanket ban on "prepared foods."

I love going to DC events; there’s always someone who’s like “are you Banana Cocaine Cassie?” and then I get to talk at them about Deng for 40 minutes

@BachmannRudi In TX the law states the legislature creates the districts. In VA the law states a bipartisan commission creates them. That is the difference. Agree with gerrymandering or don’t. But the difference here is following the law.

Can conservatives from the US explain to me why the VA gerrymander (which was approved by voters) is not OK, while the one in TX and others in the South are? Please make a serious, good-faith effort. No German random posters please. PS: I think all gerrymandering is bad.

@Mattmj1314 Capital gains aren’t adjusted for inflation, dipshit. Selling an asset at breakeven real terms doesn’t mean you made no money; it means the asset performed exactly as a non-productive store of value should. These “explainers” feel increasingly necessary!

@Bellemosse I suggested nothing of the sort. I pointed out that what Adam Smith (how shameful he is named such) calls profit isn’t profit. Again, thank You for your entirely unnecessary explainer

“People have asked me why I don’t just drop the price again, but I refuse to give my home away cheaply just because of the ridiculous economic climate we’re in.” Remember that struggling young people should just pick up more work, and lose the avocado toast, but older people shouldn’t be forced to lose a lick of profit in a housing market that has been horrendously inflated to the detriment of everyone who actually makes this country work.

@Mattmj1314 I’m not the one suggesting that a “breakeven” price is reasonable when the market clearly disagrees 🤷🏼‍♂️

@Mattmj1314 @adamndsmith Sellers will be paid the market clearing price, and only the market clearing price, regardless of whether they make any profit. If she wants a bid she can either lower the price or find someone willing to pay more than the asset is worth!

@DolphinMossad @RavensAnger It's definitely illegal? Health dept. rules in almost every state/county/city only permit food to be prepared/stored/distributed within certain temperature and time ranges.

Crazy to me that we have a relative glut of small, often quite pretty college campuses for sale at the same time as we have a glut of billionaire eccentrics with their own unusual ideologies and communities, and we can't somehow make these things work together

This kind of development is really depressing to me. All kinds of weird little colleges in the Northeast are closing. Nobody wants to double major in literature and kombucha-making anymore. Everyone just wants to work for Jane Street or an AI lab.

@BanilowMary @JoyceCarolOates @NormOrnstein Academics are famously small-c conservative, which is why they are inherently disinterested in MAGA politics to begin with. With Trump II threatening research grants left and right, can you fault them for voting and acting the way they do?

I know, many people just don't believe this. in fact, in some professions it was even more exclusive: an elder got on a phone, made a few calls, & his candidates (younger white men, protégées of his or his friends) were offered a job, without an interview. do you seriously think that, however educated & qualified, women & persons of color from outside this network had a chance? maybe literally 1 in 1,000. when I was an undergraduate, virtually no women were on university faculties anywhere except women's colleges; I did not have a single woman professor until graduate school & then just one, famed Helen White, eminent in her field. now, things are much different, but the pull is back toward the old white-boy network again, with T***p's special brand of DEI rewarding MAGA loyalists.
Joyce Carol Oates@JoyceCarolOates

before DEI, only white men were even interviewed. DEI was instituted to at least make interviews possible for non-white men; & to everyone's surprise, or no one's, once the playing field was leveled women & persons of color began to be hired. naturally, white men were miffed. not fair! when it's sheer cold-blind merit, all benefit. T***p had to remove DEI & replace it with his own brand of DEI: T***p loyalists. that is sole requirement for advancement in T***pDarkAge.

No you don’t get it when Trump says “a whole civilization will die tonight” he is being hyperbolic and posturing unlike when Iran says “death to America” which is actually a very serious threat and should definitely serve as the basis for an invasion
