Bankman-Fried and his cadre were all what’s known as “effective altruists” .. the basic idea is believing in getting rich mainly so you can then give it all away for the better good. SBF gave/threw away so much money, often not even knowing where it was going per Lewis’ book. But he did knowingly try to buy elections, often giving candidates money who he’d never met … and in some cases the candidate had no idea where the money even came from. Hundreds of millions of dollars. That was most shocking to me. Threat to democracy and buying elections aspect of the FTX story not getting enough attention.

@SullyCNBC $55 M for 20 hours work to TB12. That's $2M more than the $53 M (2017 $15M, 2018 $15 and 2019 $23M) that Tom Brady was paid for his final three years as a Patriots. spotrac.com/nfl/tampa-bay-…

@iamjakestream @typesfaster @balajis I think we’ve found that the nuance of bonds vs loans, AFS vs HTM accounting and bank capital requirements does not find fruitful conversation on this app There’s a reason bank finance was considered nerd work

@typesfaster @balajis Not really though …? A spreadsheet of shitcoins is and always was worth zero. Treasuries when held to maturity are worth what you paid for them.

Balaji (@balajis) keeps making this hilarious and fair point that banks not marking their bonds to market is the same as SBF posting those spreadsheets showing that FTX wasn’t insolvent because they owned FTT and other shitcoins that were worth $10 billion at the peak of crypto

Don’t really like to give particular trades on here (manage $ professionally & not much upside). But if CBs back off & cut tail on banking issues then lot of interesting trades in Fx, commod & equity. Rates should be more about curve. Not huge fan of credit here.

@osullyville What do you think happened to assets in the pension fund? Same thing as your 401k, you just won’t know until you retire

@kupat__ This isn’t all - need to discuss the stability mechanism was to sell more LUNA to support UST - that’s why it lost way more than the $2.5B reserve, and LUNA/UST crashed together Careful with high-level takes, that’s how people ended up buying these things in the first place

How do you turn $1,000,000 → $0.43 in 7 days? One of the biggest collapses in crypto history occurred this week... Who's up for a story? 👇👇👇

@theOlliePickard I do think kinematics would be intuitive for many people But the world is complex enough I also think most people don’t care how things work, just that they do work (your followers notwithstanding)

It's been more common for the S&P 500 to have a daily move of more than +/-1% than less than 1% in 2022 (47 of 92, including today)
