I wrote something in my journal this morning that I've never said out loud. At 30, I have everything I want. A fiancée I love. Friends and family who show up for me. A business I built. Physical and spiritual health. And I still woke up with anxiety sitting in my chest before I even checked my phone. Not because anything is wrong. Because I'm a founder. And founders have been wired to believe that the moment they stop feeling the urgency, they're falling behind. Here's the catch-22 nobody talks about: The whole promise of entrepreneurship is freedom. Freedom of time, freedom of choice. That's why we do it. That's what we tell ourselves. But then we build lives where we feel guilty sitting still. (not all of us, but definitely a lot of us!) Where being present with the people we love feels irresponsible. Where working all hours becomes a badge of honor we wear to cover up the fact that we're just scared to slow down. The freedom we chased became the cage we built. This morning I made a deliberate choice to sit with my journal and force extreme presence with no agenda. And the uncomfortable truth I wrote down? The angst isn't a signal that I need to do more. It's a signal that I've tied my self-worth to output for so long that presence feels like a threat. That's not drive. That's avoidance clouded by work ethic. I know I'm not the only one who reads the vulnerable founder posts, saves them, and keeps scrolling without admitting any of it applies to them. My two actionable pieces of advice from this experience: 1. Sit with the quiet long enough until you understand the root cause of where these feelings come from. 2. Talk to a therapist or someone who can empathize with the feeling you have.

We just rebuilt a website for a youth sports org acquiring clubs across the country. The first thing Brandon Shangraw told us: "It lacks professionalization." That one sentence shaped the entire build. @USAPrimeREC is self-described "Chick-fil-A of youth sports." Acquiring baseball clubs across the country. Expanding into soccer and basketball. 1,200+ college commits since 2017. 70+ draft picks since 2020. But here's what made this @getplatter project different from most builds we do. Their website isn't really a store. It's a validation tool. When a parent is deciding whether to put their kid in a USA Prime program, they Google it. When a coach is being recruited, they check the site. When a partner org is evaluating a deal, the first thing they do is pull up the website. The old WordPress site didn't have branded photography. The messaging was scattered. There were no trust signals. For an organization operating at a national level, the site was actively working against them. So we rebuilt it on @Shopify in two phases. Phase 1 was all brand and marketing pages. Baseball, About Us, Coaches, Parents. The stuff that makes someone say, "OK, these guys are real." Phase 2 added the e-commerce layer. Team store, bundles, collections by audience. But the store was secondary. The primary job of this site is to make people trust the organization before they ever buy anything. Most founders think of their website as a conversion funnel. Sometimes the highest-converting thing your site can do is just prove you're legitimate.

19 rules I follow right now that protect my energy, my time, and sanity: 1. Up before 5. On the computer before 6. 2. Workout by 5:30 AM. Every day. No exceptions since Hyrox locked me in. 3. Peptides, saunas, ice baths. I inject myself in the stomach every morning and chase it with an energy drink. (And always happy to talk about any of this for anyone interested) 4. Water and electrolytes immediately upon waking. Before anything else hits my system. 5. Dopamine seeking habits only after noon. No social media, no scrolling, no entertainment before 12pm. 6. Zero TV. I have TVs in my house for no reason other than covering wall space. 7. Drive to the gym = market content, podcasts, research. Music is saved for the drive home when everything's done. 8. No name brand clothing. I don't care what I'm wearing and I don't want anyone else to either. 9. Phone OFF or in the other room during time with Kingsley. Can't be half present. Whole commitment to whatever's in front of me at that moment. 10. 7:00 PM work shutdown. Most days. If I'm still going after 7, something in the day went wrong. 11. Wednesdays completely open. No calls, no meetings. Dedicated to getting ahead for the rest of the week. 12. Monday and Tuesday I prep for Tuesday and Wednesday. Wednesday I prep for Thursday and Friday. Always working a day ahead. 13. Selection of project over selection of role. I'd rather pick the right thing to build than the right title to hold. 14. I train for competitions now. Hyrox Anaheim is next. Having something physical to train for & compete in keeps everything else in check. 15. If someone on my team doesn't communicate proactively when something isn't done, that's inexcusable. Silence is the fastest way to lose trust with me. 16. Integration over balance. I don't try to balance work and family. I draw hard lines so both get 100% when it's their turn. 17. When traveling, mornings and afternoons are full family time. Evenings are work blocks. Every call happens, every decision gets made. Nothing falls apart. 18. Find something worth working toward that makes you think "fuck it, I'll wake up earlier." If your goal doesn't do that, it's not big enough. 19. When nothing else works, work works. My dad gave me that. It's how the Shackelfords operate.

imagine you’re Travis Kalanick you built Uber from nothing into a $70 billion company and changed how every city on earth moves then in the worst three weeks of your life, family tragedies hit, and five of your investors hand you a letter demanding you resign so you step down the board replaces you, your successor and board sell off the self driving division you created, the thing you believed was Uber’s entire future gone $4 billion to Aurora the mainstream media tries to write your obituary: toxic culture, bad leadership, and a cautionary tale silicon valley moves on as they always do but you don’t you don’t really forget you go quiet, completely quiet you take $150 million and buy a ghost kitchen company called CloudKitchens you raise over a billion dollars, hit a $15 billion valuation, build a company with thousands of employees and nobody even knows the name eight years in stealth, employees aren’t even allowed to put your company on their LinkedIn then today you rename the company Atoms, and it’s not a kitchen company anymore it’s a robotics company 1. food 2. mining 3. transport your first move? acquiring Pronto the autonomous vehicle startup built by Anthony Levandowski, the same engineer you originally swooped away from Google to build Uber’s self driving program oh and he went on to deploy 100+ autonomous trucks for one of the largest materials companies on earth now he’s coming back to work with you and the reports say Uber itself the same company that pushed you out, is now backing you to go after self driving harder than Waymo the guy they removed is the guy they end up needing poetic justice your framework aka everything in civilization is mined or grown, manufactured and moved you call it the golden age your manifesto ends with three words: “I never left” eight years of silence then this but here’s what people keep getting wrong about your situation everyone wants to call it a comeback or a revenge story it’s neither you just went quiet and built for eight years while everyone who wrote you off had stopped paying attention that’s not revenge, that’s just what true builder obsession looks like most founders would’ve stayed bitter most would’ve written a book and done a podcast tour, most would’ve taken the $2.5 billion in shares and disappeared off to a beach or Epstein’s island you didn’t do any of that you just kept building and now the same people who pushed you out need you again so whether you love him or hate him the most dangerous person in any room is the one who goes quiet yet never stops building karma is real welcome back Travis

I am proud to announce that late last year, I sold Mini Katana to a new owner. I am really grateful for the whole team and everything that MK has given me. It was my first measurable success. I started it when I was 23 and had nothing to my name. Advertising bans didn’t stop us, tariffs didn’t stop us. Last year a potential acquirer approached us. They buy and run YouTube channels. My job was done: Scaling our YouTube presence to 30m subscribers across two channels. 1b views a month 8 figures in our first 2 years. Hiring some of the best people and having a culture I’m immensely proud of. I have a lot more free time. I will be shifting my full focus to my other ventures. (Picture of our first ever warehouse space outside of my apartment).

I started a little marketing agency 7 years ago called Homestead, named after the street I grew up on. I had the vision to build something special and looking back now, I think we did exactly that. Today I’m excited to announce that Homestead has been acquired by Verndale (also recently acquired VAAN Group) in an effort to create a DTC growth platform built to support brands across the entire commerce lifecycle. I’m extremely grateful to my business partner @_RileyTrotter for all of the time he’s given this company and all the incredible work that he’s done. Riley took over as CEO a few years ago and Homestead wouldn’t be where we are today without his leadership and pursuit of greatness. I can’t say enough about my other partners @kellybird__ and @jsappington. These two have shown a level of commitment to building this company that is unmatched. Watching them both grow as leaders over the last few years has been nothing short of inspiring. To all our current and past team members, thank you for always giving Homestead and our clients 100% effort. Will forever be grateful to you all for helping us get to where we are today. To all of our clients, thank you for trusting in us to help grow your businesses. This is not an easy task and we have never taken it lightly. As for me, I’m officially stepping out of the agency business, but as most of you know I haven’t been involved in the company for some time as Riley/Kelly/Jacob have been and will continue to lead Homestead for years to come.
